Water pump...

How do i know when my water pump is almost gone, and in need of a replacement? I had someone take a look at it recently and told me that it was lookin like it's seen better days, so i'm thinking that for future sense, i might just buy one and install it. Any information would be great guys, thanks.

Usually the bearings on the water pump start making some little scratch noise asociated with little leaking from under/behind the pulley and eventually it starts getting worse, if you see some of this then you might want to consider a replacement soon, but if no over heating/leaking or any other related symptom occurs then you should be fine, its hard to tell if the pump its going bad from the exterior just overlooking, sometimes its just very dirty, but thats doesnt mean its bad...

Also if you have some leak and the pump seems fine, check the engine seals...
