non dsm question but maybe some one can help

My friend has a VW golf its like a 91 non turbo one. We car pool to work and this morning the felt like it just lost alot of power. There was no sudden noises the car made. No white smoke from the tail pipe. We are going to run a compersion test after work to see if maybe he is only running on 3 cylinders. Other then that and checking to make sure all the spark plugs are good what else could i check to try to find the problem? The only things that come to mind is a blown spark plug blown head gasket or one cylinder just gave out. The car doens't sputter or anything it just don't have as much power. Any help would be great. could be any number of things.....maf, fuel pump, coil pack, etc....you should check it for codes first thing....
