I have a 97 gst 5 speed I got the motor rebuilt and a different transmission, because the old one went out. Now here is my problem yesterday I was driving it and got on it and it done normal, but after I slowed down and came to a stop an pulled out on the highway I got back on it and soon as a I got up to 4 rpms I heard chattering and I let go of the gas because I didnt want to blow up. I know it aint a rod knocking or a spun bearing. An its not a exhaust leak I had a mechanic look at it today an he said the noise is coming from the oil pan. Does anybody know anything that could cause a noise in the oil? An is the oil pump have a chain? The mechanic asked me and i had no idea. Any help would work thanks.

My uncle looked at it before the mechanic and my uncle said that it might be a balance shaft then I went to the mechanic and he said he would take the oil pump off but charge a 100 dollars. So with little knowledge I got on cars I think Ill take the oil pan off besides paying that much

Either way, to replace the balance shaft bearing... the motor will need to come out... unless this guy has magic voodo and can remove the long shaft through the chassis

It doesnt sound like your mechanic knows what he's doing since he asked if it had a chain WTF.. i would take it to a reputable Mitsu shop near by.. or ask for some sidework from some Local DSMer's ;)

Yeah the mechanic said a hundred just to pull the oil pan off I decided to just take it home cause it still drives. If the balance shaft did spin a bearing would it hurt the car, and how much roughly would it cost to pull a motor out an put a new bearing in?

Where do they hide those chains nowadays?
go with a balance shaft delete kit! 40 bucks i paid for mine

If you spun a BS bearing... Then yes it could hurt the car, the BS could seize which would lock and/or shred the BS belt, which could very easily take out the timing belt; if that happens, bye bye head. BS bearings are cheap, $15-16 each from extremepsi.com, pulling the motor is free if you can pull it off yourself. Personally I would eliminate the balance shafts, an elimination kit is only about $40 and the peace of mind is priceless.

does it hurt the engine or make any noises if you delete the balance shaft

they dont "balance" the engine they just soak up small engine vibration. remove them and your engine will not make more vibration, just more vibration will be felt. this can only be felt at idle any how. the idle will be kinda ruff. its a dsm they dont have perfect idle any how. as far as the "mechanic" askin you if it was a chain or belt. OMG. thats the first sign of a major idiot. what kinda mechanic comes out and asks the customer those kinda questions? dude if your oil pan is makin funny noise it could be any one of the bearings in the bottom end. plain and simple. rods, mains, B-shafts. oil pump. you said the motor was rebuilt? by who? hopefully not the mechanic that asked you if it was on a chain. just cause its rebuilt doesnt mean that it cant spin a rod bearing. was it plaster gauge when put back together. was it machined so that you needed bigger bearings to compensate? theres so many factors involved man. loud sound from oil pan. i bet you have a spun con rod bearing. you mentioned your not to terribly mechaniclly inclined. take it to a reputable shop, perferably the local mitsu or chrysler dealership. "joes garage" down the street or what ever just isnt gonna cut it. and most of the so called tech's at the local tire store or muffler shop dont usally have the education the real mechanics have at the dealership. good luck.

My uncle rebuilt the motor I put about 1500 miles on it before I really got on it but it didnt hurt nothing then drove it for another 1000 miles and got on it and that happened. when you drive it after 4 rpms the loud gets loud and starts like chattering(thats the best I can decribe it) and the car wont really acclerate that good once after 4 rpms, it falls on its face pretty much. So if i take the oil pan off I probably tell what it was could i?

deffinatley give us all more detail. like why the engine was rebuilt in the first place. what was the original failure, the new and used parts that went back into the engine at time of rebuild. more details please

The first time it was blew up I think it spun a bearing somewhere I think, but im not sure because I bought the car when the motor blew up. An the guy I got it off of had a mechanic working on it but he died so all his parts was in boxes. Nothing was together, it was a mess. The first thing I done with the engine was take it to a machine shop and get the head pressured test and new valves put in. The block was hoaned I think thats what its called not sure LOL. I got the cranked turned, and they done something with the rods. The new parts I got was some ebay rebuild kit that cost like 500 dollars it came with new pistons and bearings and timing belt and some other stuff. An I got a bunch of new parts but they wasnt internals. The rest of the new parts was external. Slave cylinder, master cylinder, stage 3 clutch, and I think thats it, and also a transmission cause my old one messed up. I put the wrong gear oil in the old I dont know if that had something to do with the old transmission messing up
