using a "test pipe" in a smog state

Has anyone used a test pipe and passed in smog state? which did you use? Ive got a 95-96 420A im going to replace all the exhaust. Should I keep the cat it has and bolt it up to all the new exhaust.:confused:

if you know a shop that will look the other way then you should be able to get away with cat delete.. if not then make sure you get them to make you a removable race pipe with a cat setup to bolt into its place.. should take 6 universal flanges and a foot or 2 of extra pipe with the cat..
 
You will fail the visual as well as the emmisions. You HAVE to have a FUNCTIONING cat to pass smog.

Are there really shops that will risk the $25,000 fine and loss of a serious money-maker (i.e., doing inspections) or is this one of the mythical "what if"s?
 
if you know the right people, some shops will do anything you want. hell my exhaust doesnt even have a place for a cat, just solid pipe all the way back with a small flex section, and its tagged and inspected and has been for quite a while. (i did buy that exhaust with my shell, but i could have one made tomorrow at 2 of 3 different local shops where no one would question it)
my car would fail emmisions, and after 18 months they finally sent me a notice to go, but luckily at this point my 92 is old enough to get historic tags and never worry about emmisions again.
 
Just make sure your car is tuned up fresh oil change fresh spark plugs and wires. Just go try and pass without the cat, whats the worse they can say no? I pass without one I know every place is different but just try if not then worry about getting a cat if u pass without then your good.
 
i passed emission in nc with no cat using 2 non foulers where my o2 goes then put the o2 in the non foulers makes the computer think there is a cat

Hell yea ^^ me and a few of my co-workers are going this week to get our "inspection" done. Lol which really just requires a slip of 60-100 bucks. I know people that been doing this for years.
 
you should only need to worry about emissions once a year, suck it up and swap them out each time
 
yeah thats what i was saying.. also if its obd 2 with v2 or v3ecmlink you can turn the CEL light off for them parameters.. thats what i did with mine.. now the only reason my cel light comes on is with coolant temps being to high..

I live in Sacramento. We have to smog every 2 years. I had to buy a new cat to pass inspection. So I had A muffler shop weld flanges on the piping for me to swap from test pipe to cat when ever I want. It literally only has 5 miles on it from the distance to the smog station and back to the garage to re-install the test pipe! She couldn't breath with that crap on there.:(
 
Don't run the test pipe man! It's not worth it if you live in a state where they're illegal!!! This morning my mother was driving my car and got pulled over and now SHE has to go to court because of my f*****g test pipe!!! Not worth the trouble man! Only run them on the track.
