1G cut coolant temp connector

Well, I guess I should start this off explaining some things...

I picked a 91 TSi AWD up from a local forum. The seller claimed it only need a couple minors things done. (don't they always?)

Anyway... I bought it cheap, knowing it was going to need a ton of work.

I just did a timing belt, B/S delete, head gasket (who uses felpro paper gaskets on a turbo car?) the regular DSM stuff.

My question is...
Why would someone cut off the connectors to both of the coolant sensors. (I think they are both coolant sensors anyways.)

Also, where the heck do I go to get them? I have read that some dodges and jeeps use the same connectors, but I am not anywhere near a pick-n-pull. any ideas as to where I could find these and have them shipped? I live in northern Michigan, and junkyards here think all customers are thieves. we cant just go pull the part we need.

Was it actually paper, or a composite gasket? The Felpro composite gaskets are actually very good to use and many use them including myself.

Well, how about taking a picture of the sensors since you are unsure if they are in fact coolant temp sensors.

Once you figure out what sensors they are for, you can contact via PM usernames GaryMitsu and/or Stangmurdera. Tell them the parts in question and they will let you know if they are available. Both deal with parting out vehicles and are supporting vendors on this site.

Thanks. I know for a fact one is a coolant temp sensor... This being my 3rd DSM, I have never had to mess with the other.

The head gasket was a cheap felpro from autozone. I have the cardboard wrapper in my hatch. it was 22 bucks.

If they are the coolant temp sensors you can crimp on female conectors. Thats how mine is currently hooked up.

ok, I just went out and snapped some quick pics.

they currently do have female spade connectors on them... but I dont think they are on the right wires. the car doesnt show its gaining temp, even after sitting for 20 minutes at idle.

I wish I still had my 92... I could just cross ref. the wire colors and swap sensors to verify what the issue is.

I'm almost positive that, that upper ECT sensor is a 2 wire sensor.

Sounds like the Felpro composite gasket which is capable of holding a ton of boost with the proper head studs.

I took my car to one of those big car care centers because my car had "overheating" issues. Turned out the temp sensor that controlled the gauge was faulty. But, they too cut the wire connecting the sensor. I don't know why. I just ended up buying a new sensor and a female connector and installed the new one myself.

Single connector is for the gauge and the 2 pin is for the ECU.

right... except my connectors are cut off.

I have the wire colors for the connectors located, thanks to the post above. But the sensors to connect them to, is where I am hung up. both sensors have 3 pins.

The sensor on the coolant inlet, nearest to the radiator cap from left to right is GY/BG. That is coolant temp switch pertaining to the AC system.

The two spade ECT sensor is wired YG/GB, vertical/horizontal. Polarity with resistance style sensors doesn't matter normally.

A single YG connects to the temp sensor for the dash's coolant gauge.

If your issue is which YG is which, you can always conduct a continuity test on them. The ECT sensor connects to the ecu at pin 20, so you could connect the ground (BG) with power (YG) under the hood, and ring out with wires at the ECU harness using pin 24(ground) and pin 20 (ECT sensor).

I don't know about the 1g but my 2g has the ECU temp sensor is the big one that the guy is pointing to in the picture above. This one has 2 wires and the gauge sensor is smaller and only has one tab to connect a wire to. I imagine that they should be the same between both gens.

Im pretty sure that one is a temp sensor for the ac according to the haynes manual.

I have the problem of the car not starting in the cold, so I decided to try replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor. I bought a new sensor, but when I went to unplug the old one, the wires and plastic were so old and brittle that they crumbled off the connector.

I assume I have to just add female connectors and attatch it that way, but there isn't much wire to work with. Do I have to replace the whole wire harness?

Also, is the car ok to drive without those two wires connected to anything?

I ended up replacing that part of the harness, and the new coolant temperature sensor fixed my problem! It was -4 yesterday morning and it started first try. Before it wouldn't even start if it was 32 degrees.
