The only difference is the mounting ear height. Lay the caliper flat on the floor and measure the whole height of the caliper from the top to the bottom of the mounting ear. A 2g caliper will be around 4 3/4" tall. If its shorter then its a 1g. I went with a 2g caliper with a bracket from tuners nation designed for a 1g caliper with 2g rotors. What that did for me was allow me to go with a bigger rotor. The closest fit i found was from an 06 lexus GS350 front rotor. I had to machine the hub centric out to our size and machine a little out of the hat to clear our hub diameter.
Your going to upgrade your rears as well aren't you?

thanx for the info. the reason i wanted to stick with 1g calipers is the website said the brackets are design for a 1g caliper only to be able to use the 13 inch cobra rotors.

if i go with 2g calipers will it still work with cobra rotors?

i do plan on doing the back also with 3kgt rear or evo brakes.

so i just talk to the guy and he says the caliper measures from outer side of mounting ear to other side about 4.25 inches... and from what i know the 2g is like 5 inches plus.

anyone have any inside on this?

The only difference inbetween 3kgt vr4 1g and 2g calipers is the mounting ear height. 2g's are longer. If I remember right there is about 3/4 inch difference between the 1g and 2g rotors. You may want to make sure the calipers are actually from a 3kgt vr4.... sounds like it may have come off an sl model.

If you get 2g calipers and the brackets where made for 1g's it won't work. You will have to search tons of rotor dimension specs from different cars and chances are you will end up having to machine something to make it fit.
I almost forgot I had to make spacers for the bracket in front to get the right offset to match the caliper with the rotor. It was .365" thick and 1" dia.

My advice would be to get brackets designed for the 1g front calipers with 2g rotors and just buy a set of 2g rotors front and back. Pick up 2g rear calipers make some spacers .310 thick and .75 dia.

Here's a pic of my calipers for identification. Mine are 2g 3kgt vr4 TT calipers. Like I said before if you lay the caliper flat and measure from the top of the caliper housing to the bottom of the mounting ear its about 4 3/4" tall (the overall caliper height). The mounting holes are approx 6 1/4" center to center.
The front calipers are 4 pot. Two on each side. The rears are 2 pot. One on each side. The 1g rears look more like our front calipers.

How much is he asking for the calipers? You can get fronts for about a hundred a piece rebuilt from auto shops.

You know this is going to cause problems with finding wheels that fit right. DSM wheels won't fit. Your probably going to have to go with 17's.

Here's some threads when I was doing mine.

Will 3000gt VR4 2pot REAR calipers/rotors bolt onto a 2G?
What wheels and offsets clear 3k gt vr4 brakes

they guy is asking 100 for both with pads
im only doing the front for now back is next month
i already have 17 inch wheels whit 40 offset so they should clear just fine.

i want to use the 1g calipers to be able to use the 13inch cobra rotors and call it a day. i know the 2g calipers extend out more so you can run bigger disk but i dont really have time or money to go track down rotors like yours and then pay the machine shop to get them worked on. but thanx to your help i can now have an idea of what the other ones should be. if the ears are that long then definitely i wont get them. as for the over all wideness on a 1g its suppose to be like 4 inches no more than that.

i was planing of getting all around 1g brakes of a 3kgt vr4 since they are direct bolt ups pretty much and 100% upgrade.

You will like them. A hundred is a decent deal on them. The rebuild kits for them are about 30 bucks though. So if they need rebuilt your gonna end up spending almost the same as buying "new" ones from a parts warehouse. Check this place out. I even posted a discount code for them in another thread. Just giving you options. Good luck with the upgrade.
