Hey guys,

Let me start out by stating that I have a 98gs-t fwd 7bolt, maf-t, 16G with supporting mods. I got some 650 injectors to install. I've been doing some research and noticed many people using maf-t with safc and sometimes wideband. My question is, am I safe by installing my 650's and setting my maf-t to the 650 setting? I plan on running 20 lbs

You could set the maft to run the 650's. You can tune a little bit with the maft box, but the safc gives you a lot more ajustability. I would check to see if your ecu is flashable as mentioned. You could go a lot further if you went that route.

My1Gdsm...you sir are my savior! I finally got a chance to check my ecu and yup..I'm good to go. Now i'm wondering would I still need to buy a wideband to check my air/fuel ratios or would the logging software be sufficent?

You still need a wideband sensor and controller, but you wouldn't need a gauge if you didn't really want one..

Hey Absit, seeing that you have a 98 also I assume you've flashed your ECU. I hope you don't mind that I'm asking you a couple a questions. How is your setup? What did you have to get before flashing your ECU? From researching I've gathered that I have to get the 2.0 OBDII to usb cable with the extra cable to plug in the ECU slot 79 and with the 3.5mm head phone jack on the other end, a scan software like evoscan and a modified ROM like ceddymod to start.

Well, I don't use my 98 H8 ECU, I use an Evo 8 ECU. But what you NEED is an Openport (Tactrix) 2.0 cable, EvoScan, ECUFlash, and a laptop. I don't remember off the top of my head if the Openport 2.0 cable comes with the flash port connector or not, my Openport 1.3U did.

You don't need a modified ROM to start, but there's no reason not to use Ceddy's as there's a lot in there you'll end up wanting anyway.

Also, the "ECU slot 79" should already have it's own port right next to the OBD2 port on a '98.

So all I need to do is add the wideband to your list and I'm good to go? Sorry if I may seem like an imbecile but I don't no squat about tuning and was scared of it for a while but since I found out I can flash, it gave me a boost in confidence. I've been doing a lot of reading and research and it seems like the only way I'm going to learn this by getting my hands dirty with it. I just want to make sure that I'm prepared before hand. I'm a system analyst so I know how important backing up is so I plan to backup my original ROM and put it in a safe place before attempting to MOD anything. Another thing, out of curiosity, why go with an EVO ecu and not your original H8?

Assuming you already have a boost gauge, yes all you'd need to add is a wideband for basic tuning, though getting a MAP sensor and logging boost will be extremely useful when you go to post logs.

It's a good idea to back everything up, take your stock ROM, back it up, read-only, change the extension, whatever you have to do to make it safe, before touching anything.

Then when you get working ROM, do the same, never delete anything that works!

I went with the Evo ECU because the cable's cheaper and faster, the ECU's not expensive (generally, H8 ECUs go for more than Evo ECUs, but you instantly lose that and some if you buy a patch harness) and it has thousands of users supporting the tuning community (compared to our one or two devs and a hand full of users) which means a lot more of the ECU has been discovered/hacked for more control over everything.

The H8 may or may not catch up, I have my doubts given the popularity of DSMLink (et al), but the Evo ECU will continue to be fine-tuned for a long time by a large userbase.
