There usually is some play in the shift linkage, but it could be worn where it connects to the forks inside the tranny.

The problem is usually in the cables or shifter. The bushings where the cables mount to the tranny wear out, allowing the cables to flex rather than properly moving the linkage in your pic. If the cables are rigid, that linkage won't move (or least not as much).

There's a link somewhere around here on how I fixed mine, but basically I yanked what was left of the stock bracket bushings and replaced them with short pieces of heavy-duty fuel hose and flat washers. I also replaced the cable ends with solid brass bushings (also known as the "skateboard mod")

These two changes made a huge difference. I'd try these before opening the tranny to look for a problem.

well ive already done all the other shifter mods its jsut that one that is loose now and i just wanted to know if there was an easy fix for this, so i would have to open up the tranny?

I wouldnt worry about it, unless you are having major shifting issues and have wasted endless amounts of time adjusting the cables and your clutch. That should have some play anyways.

i know what the little black bushing thing your talking about im gonna rotate it but the other lever is the one that is worn........

I hope my problem is right up the same ally.

I've got no play with the shifter in nuetral. I have to force it back and forth in nuetral, as normal would just be freeplay. I can seariously push it over (as to put it in 5th gear, but not actually put into gear) and it just stays there. Doesn't return to center. This seems as though something is binding or in need of some serious lube.

Note: I just purchased the "under hood bushing" kit and will install per the Tech article on that. Also ordered a REAL B&M short shifter (waiting for that to arrive), and hopefully ordering the shifter plate bushings soon from MachV in the next hour or so.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm trying to do everything by the book and not cheap out on parts. It's just going to take longer to get everything I need... money is a huge factor as usual.

Update:
Everything is installed. Short Shifter B&M (set to 50%), Shifter Plate Bushings, Under Hood Bushings.

After everything was put in, I noticed that who ever had messed with the shifter before had no idea how to put the retaining spring back in the correct way. I even put it back in the way it came out and noticed that it was wrong. The two "ears" if you will, were not crossed before inserted into the lever in order to provide the tension it needed to push or pull the shifter back to dead center neutral. Also, the nut for the spring was way over tightened.

Now that I have that all back in it's place, this setup makes a whole world of difference.

I recommend everyone to invest the time and money if you want a clean crisp shift into every gear!!

ya I had issues with my car as well and I replaced the cables and all the bushings since they were so wore out . it worked great
I also put solid mounts in the base of the shifter in the passenger compartment

recently I bought a talon with HORRID shifting and I replaced all the bushings in the linkage and the shifter assembly and it was good as new. The bushings were about 8$ a piece though:idontknow:

I'm not sure about the DSM's, but on my Stealth (94 TT) I bought new bushings from 3sx and they worked great. Best of luck!
