New guy here
i posted this above but i dont think anyone reads those haha. but hey everyone, my name is Doug, I'm from NJ. I was directed to this site from a google search because I may be purchasing a 1g talon in the near future. It is an automatic AWD turbo, I forget the year but will find out. I have never owned a DSM and am here to learn as much as I can! I want to make it kind of quick for not much money. That's what these cars are good for, right?
Anyway, right now I own a 2000 Pontiac Trans Am WS6, not much done to it but its decently fast.
I am highly mechanically inclined, so I can do most work myself, provided I have all the tools. I know how engines work and all of the major components to automobiles. I've been building, repairing, and maintaining engines in cars, trucks, diesels, etc. for about 8 years now (and I'm only 20 ).
I will be around since I'm a noob to the whole import/dsm scene to learn about THESE cars to help make mine a little faster. (when i get it)
Also, what should i be on the lookout for when purchasing one of these cars? Anything I can tell that is wrong with the car without taking it apart? Besides the obvious squeels, knocks, grinds, etc that could be due to worn parts.
also what are the first maintenance items i should look at after purchase to make sure the car is running in top shape so i dont run into too many reliability issues. Thanks!

In my opinion turbo cars are high maintainance.... I would rather go with the 5 speed than automatic if I was you, but its on what you like. The turbo cars ask for premium fuel, which sucks with high gas prices...when you look at this car make sure the engine is running smooth and there is no knocks or anything. make sure there is no oil leaks, etc.... test drive it to see how it runs, make sure the turbo isnt shot....

high gas prices arent a problem for me
<<<< that thing requires the high octane shit too else ill damage the motor at 6800 rpms.
and the only reason im looking at this one is because there arent any other turbo cars around me for sale, and this one fits the bill at $1600. i will be performing regular maintenance as with all of my cars, but is there any special maintenance required?
i heard that there is problems with the transfer cases leaking and binding up....ill have to check out that maintenance link, but does it tell how to change the oil in the t-case or does it share trans-fluid with the transmission?

Just call up the dealership and have them check to see if the recall has been preformed on your car.

The tranny and tranfercase use the same fluid type, but they dont share the fluid. the T-case has its own filler hole and drain plug just like the tranny does ... I never had a problem with my T-case, Im sure that if there is no fluid in them they will go bad and bind up... But yeah read the maintainance too

They don't use the same fluid either. The transfer case uses a heavier weight gear type oil.

Transfer case is 75w90
Syncromesh in the trans...IF its a 5 speed
If its an auto You want ATF+3 or ATF+4
and YES there is a recall on the transfer case in the 2g AWD...I'm NOT sure about the 1G
Just change the seals and make sure it stays full of fluid.

Don't scare anyone, there not high maitenence, just a regular maintenence which should honestly be done on any car you own.
But, welcome and good luck with your dsm hunt.

- Plugs.
- Wires.
- Fuel Filter.
- Air Filter (K&N Preferred).
- Change Oil and Filter. I prefer 15W50 Mobil 1 and a brand-name filter that is NOT A FRAM.
- Change Trans Oil and Filter (Use Chrysler ATF+4).
- Change Oil in Transfer Case (Use the thickest possible gear oil you can find to resist leakage. I choose to mix 75W140 GL5 Synthetic 50/50 with Lucas).
- Change rear diff oil (GL5 75W90).
- Change timing belt, balance belt, auto tensioner, all timing pulleys, and water pump. Who knows when the last time this was done.
- Change accessory belts if they appear old and dry.
You'll probably want to drop the stock 13G turbo in favor of something a little larger in the future, but for now you'll have plenty of smiles as-is.

Im not tryin to scare anyone, I just had more problems with a turbo DSM than a non-turbo one thats why I mentioned they require more attention....
