Ok so I need a few things done on my car...

The first one which is the biggest one is I think I may need a tranny rebuild because when I accelerate in 2nd gear past 30 then let off the gas i hear a horrible grinding noise (goes away if you press the accelerator again) it does this in 3rd gear also when accelerating then letting off the gas as well as 4th.

The second thing I have more of a question on is that I blew out one of my tires the other day and I have heard some people say that when you replace tires on an AWD you have to replace all the tires. Is this true?

Lastly yesterday my alternator belt just broke and came off while i was driving. Kinda scary since it was suddenly hard to steer, smelt like burning rubber, and almost every light came on in my car. How much does this repair cost?

Thanks in advance guys :D

Tranny rebuild, i have no idea, i have a friend who did it for me, i just bought all the parts from mitsu.

You dont' have to replace all the tires, you just have to make sure you get the same tire to match the others.

Alternator belt is cake, it should take maybe 30 minutes. Find a local dsmer who does side jobs for $ on your local dsm forum. Stay away from regular mechanics and dealerships.

How worn were your old tires? You want to replace it with an exact tire. If your other three tires are worn a decent bit more than your new one, it will cause you problems. Replacing all 4 is your best option.

If you run your car in the winter (notice you're from CO) you might look at throwing on winter tires now.

I run my talon through the winter and it's almost unstoppable. I slid it off the road (black ice) and just backed it up right off the embankment (2 front wheels off the ground and muffler touching) and went on my merry way (sans some minor damage).

Well looking at those little bumps in the tread that show when your tires are worn they still have more than or around 50% life left

This intrigues me. It sounds to me like an issue with the center diff or the rearend, although I'll readily admit I'm no expert on DSM drivelines. Maybe you should try checking/changing the trans fluid first, if indeed it is the trans making the noise.

Thats the thing... I took it into the shop and they said it was the t-case. well so I payed them to rebuild it and then I get it back and now the noise is still there. So I take it back and he says "Yeah its definitely the transmission" well... he said the same thing about the transfer case. I am not gonna seriously worry about it though until the tranny really starts giving me problems simply because it still drives like any normal car theres just some extra noise. No problems shifting or grinding at all so I am figuring screw it.

Oh and me and my friend replaced the alternator belt and now it runs great again :D (did it for $12 when the shop wanted $100 ROFL)

All that is left is gettin the 4 new tires :thumb:

I broke my alternator belt and the harmonic pulley was just fine. The previous owner didn't have the belt tight enough and it glazed. Then, when it squealed and I tightened it. Every time it started to squeal, I just made it tighter until eventually it broke as I punched the gas on an on ramp. I inspected the balancer and it's just fine. Still in one piece with no cracks in the rubber. I put a new belt on and it runs just fine.

*Moral of the story: Just because a car squeals or the belt breaks, it isn't always the harmonic balancer.

I'm having basically the same problem with my car. It started right after I had a new clutch and flywheel installed. It's more prevelant at higher speeds (>40 mph) and between 2-3k rpms. It only occurs when I let off the gas with it still in gear.

Check to make sure that the exhaust is not rubbing anywhere. Also I am not a huge transmission guru, but on my cousin's first gen he had. The carrier bearing would make noise on deceleration.

About the tires, it is highly suggested by the manufacturer that you keep all tires within 2/32 of one another. Also, just because you don't hear any grinding, does not mean damage is not being caused when you throw a new tire on with old tires.

I have no idea if my sentences are well written. I'm tired I will check them tomorrow....

YES it started happening right after I had my stage 3 clutch and lightweight flywheel installed and it does it within the exact same range as you are describing, but mine i think is more noticeable at lower speeds.

Yeah I just ordered 4 brand new Nexen N7000's for $255 to my door and I am getting them installed for $40 out the door :D

Does the new clutch you bought have a street disk or a puck style disk? And if it's a puck style disk, is it sprung or unsprung? The reason I ask is because an unsprung puck-type clutch will make some really horrble sounding grinding noises under decel. It's a very good possibility that that is the problem you are having.

Its a 6 puck sprung disc so i guess thats not the problem :(

actually my harmonic dampener is fine as my car does not make that noise and the reason the belt broke is because it was much to loose and it basically tore it down

Well mine is a full-face disk, but it is unsprung. I'll have to call and talk to spec about this.

Ill just let you know i had my tranny rebuilt and granted mine was an A/T but it came to around 2200.... full new trans parts 1 year warranty and 2nd year half off. But i only paid 400... thank god that i had some sort of warranty.

Good buy on the tires, and you could always just buy a used tranny for under $500 if you can find one locally. The noise you describe in your tranny is the same thing my old altima would do, it was really whiny on deacceleration. I did the clutch and throw out bearing, but the noise never went away, but I put 55,000 miles on it like that before I sold it (when I sold it it had 197K).

i am suprised no one has mentioned to check the carrier bearings in your drive shaft as a possible source of the grinding as well. just my 2 cents
