alright this is exactly what my car sounds like when first started (just the clicking) noise and when i rev it up it gets louder just like this car but after i start driving for awhile it seems to go away, i also have really low idle alot that makes the car shake and feel like its going to die when i come to a stop idling around 200. so for the clicking do you think that it is the lifters? how important is it for me to replace them? and what about the idle? I know i am running rich but would that make the idle low?<br>

Sounds like lifters to me. If you hate the noise replace, but you dont have to rush. I drove my last eclipse around for a while with lifter tick, just had to deal with everyone looking at my car wondering why it was clicking when I first fired her up!

Valve tap is when a lifter has collapsed and the cam is smacking against the rocker which in turns smacks on top of the valve - is what it sounds like. In the olden days it'd be tappet noise from an out of adjustment setting on the rocker arm when we had solid lifters. (If he had a bent valve, his motor wouldn't be running that smooth in that high idle since one cylinder would have dead compression)

Early Subarus with those E81 motors, bein a pushrod valve motor, used solid tappets and if one was out of adjustment, it would sound like what your motor is sounding now.

You need to pull the cover off, roll the cams to TDC where all the valves are closed and press down on each of the lifters and to see if you have that has collapsed, for it will be a bit on the spongey side.

Good luck - DSM

I agree with this. I see that you are in Stanwood, I am in puyallup so I could help you if you need the assistance. Also if you would rather just have a reputable dsm mechanic I could refer you to my mechanic. PM me if you would like help and we could go from there. Good luck.

i have the same problem sometimes as well. i learned that a simple fix to it (not permanent) is to replace your oil and put some Lucas oil stabilizer in. i used mobile 1 10w30 full synthetic in mine and then about half a court of Lucas stabilizer. the ticking in my car at least only is there when the oil pressure isn't built up. when the oil pressure builds up to normal the clicking stops.
i didn't know how to check the valves and lifters until now from reading dsm1g90's post. so I'm glad i saw this.
i hope my post helps and god i hope I'm doing everything right too.
(out of work and car on frits makes life hell due to no money to fix if anything is wrong)

p.s im also sorry i didnt mean to revive a year old thread. im out of it and didnt see the 2008 date thought i saw 2009
