Gloss Black Headers from Pacesetter

The paint comes off the first time it is run. They are fairly thin, mild steel pieces. "Temporary" headers. I have one, but my car isn't running. Should be soon. I won't swap it out until I have a logger setup so I can see if there's any difference. Oh, from what else I can see, the collector isn't all that great.

If you do a search, you'll find a lot of people hate them. I got mine for cheap, I figure worst case scenario is that they are an expensive pair of flanges to make my own from.

I don't have those, but if you just want to see what a black manifold looks like heres mine, with ceramic:

Thanx Mitsu2, I'm interested in the pics and how you got the ceramic coated ones. I have more faith in the coated than these, for the reason given by tkelly27.

tkelly27: I was wondering about that also, i will do some research.

Supa Dexta : nice

they are junk i got one for dirt cheap i turn around and sold it. it will crack so plan on replacing it or taking off offen to get it rewelded

^ It's been said a million times, all tubular manifolds will crack, sooner or later. These ones, from what i've heard, happen to crack sooner. Mine has a brace from the header flange to the turbo flange, which I think was a design revision, I've not heard if this keeps it from cracking sooner or not.

I'm not trying to defend them, and I'm not partial to them just because I own one, I just don't think there has been anything other than "they crack" about them that I've seen. I saw a few crack with header wrap on them. Header wrap is the best way to ruin a tubular manifold from everything I've been told. There were also posts where people had been running them for "XX" months and "liked them", whatever that means for performance.

Here are some design flaws I've noticed. First, the inlets are small. You want to go from the port in the head to a bigger piece, it's like putting a 1g intake on a 2g head, you get that step that can not help flow. By how much? I got ~1/4" on the width and ~1/8" on the height when compared to a 2g port. Also having a bigger port will have the head surface help to reduce reversion because there's no way in hell a $150 manifold is going to have those cool reversion cone things. This can't be remedy by porting, because the pipes are put through the flange and welded, then the weld is ground to create the sealing surface. Dumb? I think so, but I've never really built a manifold before. I'm imagining this was done to keep the primaries small, or to a pipe size that they had readily available to them.

Second, it's not equal length. That being the case, the only real benefit (if any) over a cast manifold is the collector, which isn't really anything great. It does keep the pulses seperate, but if it had started higher up could have been much better.

Third, while it's nice that there are only two butt welds in all the runners, the one I have access too looks like the work of a stoned 8th grader in shop class. I couldn't do any better with the MIG, as I'm sure all these welds are done with, but the fitment of the joint is bad, you can feel it all out of place on the inside. Maybe the person that made mine had a hangover, I don't know.

Fourth, tubes are too thin for my liking. I can't get in there with a mic, and I can't hazzard a guess with fingers. I'd make mine out of schedule 40 though. Why not? What's an extra 30lbs, right?

Some people will sneer at the 3/8" flanges too. I think that's plenty thick enough with the amount of bolts holding it on. I hope it is, anyway.

Bottom line, I can't tell you if it will break, will make power, or if they are worth the price. Again, I consider this one something for me to see and build off of based on how it operates compared to a stocker. Plus it was like $75 and I didn't know any better : D I can post pictures if anyone wants them, but they will be from my cell phone *bleh*

I'm sure if you looked really critically at anything you'd find something to complain about. I dunno, the first time I saw a magnus SMIM I was kind of shocked that they didn't even bother polishing out the smokies from when they dipped the rod in the pool. Maybe that was one that had to get fixed...

Thanx, Now, say I spend the money to get them coated, In everyones opinon, will they hold up quality-wise like other coated steel headers that are readily available everywhere? AND what kinda of performance LOSS or GAIN will I expect over stock manifold? I ask this because I really like the black finish, but I will not sacrifice quality for looks, if these are simply not a good route to go then I will settle for polished or chrome.

I know a couple people (4 to be exact) that used to have pacesetter turbo manifolds.. They all cracked at the collector

Going cheap is fast

but

Going fast isn't cheap

Bought one years ago, chipped and bubbled up within 2 days of driving, but I think if you get it jet-coated it it will hold up really well

:thumb::thumb::thumb:

I have a Jet coated one that worked wonders. I didnt swap it onto my 91 and its just laying around.

I cant get it to upload from my computer.
