Should you do it with a low amount of gas in the gas tank? Or does it not matter?

Make sure the car is fairly level when you pull the assembly. You dont want gas everywhere if your tank is topped off;)

Yup, got myself a rewire kit. And its about 3/4 tank full. So I should be fine.

Don't be a sparky. Make sure you take the battery out before doing any work on the gas tank!

Make sure that when you put the pump back in the little floater that tells you how full the tank is can move around. I installed mine and it got stuck so had to take it all apart again

I have had my fuel pump in and out many times, the only time that gas level was ever a concern was when I pulled it directly after a fill-up.

The lower the better, it doesn't really matter as long as its not full but the lower it is the less fuel has to drip off the assembly and the lower it is the more likely you will be able to see any debris that may be in your tank, mine was pretty clean but I've seen car with all sorts of crap in their tanks.
