if i get dsm link i understand it will open up a bunch of new things for me, but is this something i have do download into the computer at home then hook to the socket on the ecu? how does dsm link work? how do you set it up?WTF:dsm:

You will need a '95 EPROM ECU. This ECU has a factory chip in it, which will be replaced by your new 'DSMLink chip'. Essentially you can have the ECU socketed, which will allow for easy removal and installation of the chips in the future. This will allow you to use the factory chip if you wish, or a DSMLink chip. Basically, the factory chip is de-soldered from inside the ECU and the socket it soldered in.

After you get a 95 EPROM ECU, and get it socketed, you will need to make a few basic changes to some wiring on your 99, and then you can plug the ECU right in. I will look up the specifics of the wiring swap, as it has been years since I did it, but it involves switching some injector wires and spark plug wires. Once your car is set up to run on the 95 EPROM ECU, all you need to do is get DSMLink.

The DSMLink package consists of the chip that you will put in the ECU in place of the stock one, and a device which hooks up to your OBD-II port. You then connect the computer to the OBD-II port, and run DSMLink. The software is free, and can be downloaded. Once you open up DSMLink, you are now free to make all the changes you wish. You will be able to read all about the features and advantages of DSMLink, but I will list some that I particularly like, and have come in handy before:

-turn on fuel pump with a click of a button
-adjust rev. limiters
-stutterbox
-obvious fuel trims, timing, etc.
-log all kinds of data

The list goes on, but I would highly recommend snatching up DSMLink at the first available opportunity. If I could go back in time 5 years to when my car was stock, DSMLink would have been my first mod.

I hope this helped.

ok so only the 95 ecu and no other ecu can be modded or socketed for dsm-link?

Correct. I wish I could take some pictures for you to show you what the inside of the different ECUs look like, and how to tell which is an EPROM by looking at the outside where there will be an extra letter 'E' printed on the sticker. EPROM ECUs tend to go for around $250-300 by themselves, and DSMLink for around $400-550. This seems rather expensive, but is worth it. If you really cannot afford that much, keep your eyes open. Sometimes you can find people selling both the ECU and DSMLink together for around $500 or so, which is what I paid a couple years ago.

$515 is the price of Dsmlink v2 on most all websites, and Dan your right on the button with the info from what i shortly read.

PS i have my 2G dsmlink for sale :) PM me if you want it.

The pics are on dsmlink's site, also you may as well buy it from them to ensure you're getting the real thing and the right one you need. You need a laptop to tune with, and you'll have access to their forum which is one of the best out there. The program is loaded on the laptop and then depending if it has internet access or not, you'll have to upload your logs onto the site if you want us to look over them and help you tune (of just transfer the file to whatever computer you have with net).
