Just bough a 1993 Eclipse... 1.8L, non turbo, 5spd FWD, Lots of HALFASSED mods...
Bought the car from a friend of mine for 100$ ;) Here's the catch. It's broke down. We were on an interstate, doing roughly 75 mph, in 4 or 5th.. I wasnt paying attention being the passenger. We were just cruising along, when the RPMs started climbing. At first it wasnt perceptible, but soon, we were at 6K RPMs in 5th gear, doing under 40 mph. The RPMS kept climbing, and the power kept ebbing. Now, the car wont budge. My first thought was tranny. But... that I never heard ANY grinding, smelled no tranny fluid, and the fact that the clutch engages and disengages fine, I have my doubts there. Motor will crank, and rev all the way to redline, and beyond, so I know its still good...

Does anyone know what may be wrong with my new toy? Or perhaps someone has had this same problem?
Any help would be most appreciated ;)

For 100 bux... It'll make a sweet paperweight for the time its broken if it takes long to fix... Besides with gas rising, and my other car being a 5.0 mustang..... I kinda want the 4 cyl on the road :p

Maybe something is wrong with the throttle cable? It may be stretched out, or stuck somehow. Check that out. Could also be a throttle position sensor issue. Someone else here may be able to give you more information. In the mean time, use the search feature and gather more information that may help you. Good luck.

Nah... I dont think the throttle cable is it...The throttle cable would keep the motor from responding if it was stretched... That isnt an issue, it still doesnt miss a beat. It just wont move. It's almost like its stuck in neutral... I believe it's a drivetrain issue, maybe a transfer case was my first thought.... But I dont know...

i would check the intake manifold for a major leak or a huge leak beyond the maf. If the leak is big enought it will act like the car is WOT

Clutch is Toast.
Even tho it engages and disengages.. The Fact is you apply power and go nowhere...
From your description, the clutch began slipping to the point its freespinning now... It may feel like its working correctly (in the pedal) but its not... Swap it out. While your in there. Put in a new throw out bearing. Also Check the input shaft on the tranny for any movement.. If so replace the input shaft bushing and seal... Ive seen to many ppl do a clutch change and not check that seal and bushing, just to have the seal fail in a month and puke fluid all over that new clutch and burn it up..:notgood:

Basicly put in as many new parts as you can afford into that clutch to enshure you wont be back in there in a month or two.

The dam thing doesnt have a MAF :p:p It was stripped out and the intake was replaed with some halfassed autozone CAI.... No MAF sensor whatsoever... hasnt been for months, and it always ran fine... But Intake manifold leak huh?
Thats one possibility I havent considered... how would you suggest taking on that possibility? Replacing the intake manifold gasket? Or is there some other intricacy I'm overlooking?

awesome... clutch... ok, so, anyone have a fav. parts store here online so I can price some junk?

Looks like I'll need the clutch, ###### flywheel, throw out bearing, assorted bushings... maybe even a seal or two..

Sweet... Well, at least I know what it is! :D Thanx a bunch ;)

Please put a MAF in it, and reading you first post you say theres a lot of halfassed mods which tells me it's impossible for us to fix your car. The car sounds beat as hell to me. Now it seems for $100 you got ripped off LOL. jk.

If the car truly does not have a MAF in it... Junkyard shop for OEM. or just do a GM maf and MAF-T.. which ever is cheaper....

But dude is right. You DO need it..

UNLESS for some reason the guy converted it to speed density.... But if the mods are halfass like you say I highly doubt it..

No joke >.< LOL
I bought it originally intending to part it out and make some mony. It has 18 inch Enkei rims... 2 good tires, and all 4 serial numbers matched, so I was just gonna sell them, and sell the car to a jnk yard... The kid bought a bodykit for it... But by god... its hideous.... Vader style... Spray paint included :p The dumbass I call a friend also bondo'd it to the car >.< So, Good luck reusing it.

Suspension is the upside ^^ Koni adjustables.

The car in short is your standard BEATER. Worth half what ya paid for it, and you hate it the whole time you have it LOL yet... its like an ugly dog... U just cant get rid of it. When it runs again... Who knows what the future holds for it :)

Thanks again guys, and if there is anything else you can think of... Let me know :)

It's a sad thing about DSM owners wanting to soup up a 4G37 motor and not knowing that the motor just doesn't have it from the beginning.

1-Do the clutch
2-Replace the MAF and get it connected both to the harness, to the intake hose and get a decent air filter
3-Do the correct timing procedures (5% BTDC with terminal grounded)
4-Think on doing a T-belt along with the balancer belt for this 1.8L

Get all of these done, or the majority of it, and that will be a decent sweet ride for you for a long time. The little 4G37 motors can be a hardy little motor if taken care of. May not have the nuts like a 4G63, but it hold its own.

Like he said, Have that flywheel surfaced, and checked for cracks....
And by all means go with OEM clutch, The darn things almost last forever if you dont SERIOUSLY abuse it...
Especially if the car is in as bad of shape as you say it is..
You might have it forever and do a total overhaul, which by then you might Need a high end clutch but for now. save the cash. Or you might part it out in a month.... either way, OEM clutch will be just fine for a NON-turbo car.

Why dont ya fill out your profile with all known mods to the car. That alone will help the guys here :sneaky: Help you decide which way to go with it... might as well post some pics of this beater.... :thumb:
:tease: We all need a laugh from time to time.
