More problems... ROFL

So I bought my dsm used.... 78k on it, 1990 awd 5spd. Put 300 miles on it and the trans went out.. bad deal

Anyhow... Now I've got some new problems. I've searched on these but couldn't find anything that was actually like what i'm experiencing.

First off it's just got all the basic free mods done to it and a 3 inch turboback exhuast and it seems to be hitting fuel cut, but we all know what to explore there...

Whats really pissing me off is that when I started driving it now it seems to have a new problem. If you go WOT and really get into it the throttle sticks wide open. OMG When I got back and started driving it I did a quick pull and when I went to shift into 3rd I hit the clutch and the car kept revving up and I held it in and it just started hitting the rev limiter. Had to open the hood and close the throttle by hand. Then it drove fine and everything till i decided to get into it on another pull and it did the same thing.

I took a can of wd40 to the spring mechanism that holds the butterfly shut on the tb, also applied it very generously to all the linkages under the box like metal pieces and to the peddle assembly.

It still does it, but now it goes back shut after revving up when you put the clutch in. You do a pull though and it just keeps pulling. Then when you hit the clutch it revs up like if you still had your foot on the gas for a split second when you hit the clutch, and then goes back down. Really screws with your shifting as you don't really want it to rev up and then slam it into the next gear.

Also, I did alot of driving this weekend and i noticed that i can smell gas inside the car when driving. It seems to be worse when the windows are open. I did a 360 mile trip with it yesterday and it was only getting like 21mpg, freeway the whole way. Should be better then that right?!?!! WTF I was hoping so cause my 3g, slow as it was got 27-28. And with premium being $3.79 I'll take all I can get!!

Check your throttle cable. Make sure it isnt bond or kinked and isnt broken anywhere. As for the gas smell sorry I have no clue. The gas mileage isnt going to get to much better, and there are driving techniques that will help increase it(there is a write up here on DSMTuners somewhere). Also maintenance on the vehicle will affect MPG, along with weather temp-wind,road condition(flat uphill downhill) and the gas you put into your car as well.

For the throttle sticking problem, I would inspect all of the cables and make sure none are rubbing on anything. Does it have cruise control? If nothing is rubbing everything seems good I would take the throttle body off and clean it.

try dsconnecting the throttle cable fron the throttlebody and see if it moves freely in the housing that would tell you if u had a bad cable or the throttle plate sticking

It sounds like the throttle cable is still sticking just not as badly (the cable returns partway and when you push the clutch in the motor doesn't have any resistance so it revs while the throttle cable slowly returns to normal) try dousing it with wd40 again and running it in and out manually while you spray it, if necessary you may need to replace the return assembly or add a spring or replace the throttle cable.

As for your fuel smell, I would bet that you have a bad fuel line, check under the car for fluid whenever you can the fuel may only come out at idle or maybe only while under load, jack the car up and inspect the lines, if there isn't much fuel it is probably from the return evap line which isn't pressurized if you can't find anything check out your fuel rail.

for the smell of gas take the cover off in the trunk above where the tank is and check around there and see if theres any gas around there. if not look to see if there are any puddles on the ground if your car is sitting for a little.

Another thing i had thought of is that maybe the injector O-rings are leaking... That would also explain why it's hitting fuel cut. Only thing is you'd be able to smell that good when the windows are up too right??? Also I tried smelling and looking for gas where they go into the intake mani and didn't notice anything....

DEFINITELY do a boost leak test. I did one and found out that my lower injector seals were leaking and were causing a MAJOR leak in my boosting. And at the same time you should replace the o-rings. Its very easy to do once you pull the fuel rail out. I got my seals from the dealer because they were cheaper than anyone else in town.

Throttle problem, most definately a cable issue=wd40 or PB blaster.

The O rings on your injects will not cause fuel cut. If your injectors leak you will either get engine run on for a few seconds after keys off or it will run really rich and blow black smoke but will not cut the fuel. First, check your vaccum line to the FPR, make sure thats good, check your boost control solenoid make sure thats in on piece too. Im assuming you are running stock boost right?

With an exhaust that big all the way from the turbo, I would say you may be getting boost creep and a possible spike, that is where the fuel cut is coming from not positive, but a friend of mine had a similar problem. Correct me if im wrong anyone

Actually i'm not even sure if it's hitting fuel cut now with the exhaust, it just did before when there was no exhaust on it and it was running straight out of the O2 housing. Havn't been able to test it real good since this throttle problem is screwing everything up.

Ok heres another thing that i left out from the throttle problem which makes it even more weird and makes me wonder if it really is just a cable problem. You can rev the car when its standing still and put your foot to the floor and it doesn't stick at all... ever... You can put your foot to the floor in the lower rpm range and it doesn't do it either. It's only really when it gets over the 4-5k range that it wants to stick. WTF And then like i said, you push the clutch in and it revs up and then comes back down...

I have applied tons of WD40 to the cable and all the linkages. Peddle feels smoother and it stops now at least when you push the clutch in, but it still does it.

A DSM, a car that will have problems, especially if it wasn't cared for. How much did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking?

Too damn much considering I had to get a different transmission 300 miles after I bought it. Shifted fine and everything, in and out of every gear fine, no warning, just bit the bucket.

I payed $2800 for it....

It could be a possible vaccum leak at intake maniforld or a leak at the intake pipe. Best way to locate that is turn on your car, grab a can of intake cleaner or water and spray the hell out of your intake mani and vaccum hoses an see if you notice a stumble or a racing idle.
