First time tune in- boost controller...

So I just got a 96 gsx. It has a manual boost controller in it. I got it from a kid, so I don't know what he had it set at. Thee was a broken manifold pressure gauge in the trunk.

Does this process seem right?

1) Fix current tranny problems...
2) Do a tune up
3) Buy a boost gauge and hook it up (where's the best place[I'll search that...])
4) Then slowly increase boost until we hit the stock/desired amount.

Right now I just turned it down a few times hoping to make sure it wasn't too high...
 
1) remove MBC - vacuum line from WGA to pressure source to run wastegate pressure.
2) Buy a boost gauge and hook it up (autozone)
3) compression test, boost leak test, change fluids, check hoses, check plugs/wires, air filter etc etc
4) Fix current tranny problems...
5) maintenance: timing stuff, belts, bushings, etc
6) logger
7) fuel
8) put mbc back on, slowly increase boost
 
Well the tranny is off the car... so that's why it is getting the first bit of attention. It won't be driven until the car is tuned in.

I wasn't really planning on getting a datalogger for a while... so... Should I just not use the mbc until then, or just get the gauge and turn it up to like 14psi...
 
it's generally considered a good idea to know what's going on before you increase the boost. too much air and not enough fuel is hazardous to your car's health and you don't really know you're in that situation until it's too late, without a logger.
 
You need the boost gauge so you know what the MBC is set at. DON'T INSTALL A MBC WITHOUT ONE! But first, do all your maintenance and preform a boost leak test. You can turn the boost up a little, without a logger, since mitsu set the ECU to run rich. A general limit seems to be 14psi.
 
how many miles? when was the last time the Timing belt was changed? if ever LOL
