Hey guys,

Since im a newbie it wont let me post this in the appropriate section.

Anyways I recently found out that my HG is no good and needs to be replaced. However since i'm gonna rebuild my block, I thought i'd get started on it now.

First off im gonna use my Talon as a drag strip warrior so i dont care too much about comfort since I wont be driving it daily.

Now for the good stuff, what would you guys recommend for appox. 550awhp?

I was thinking this:

ARP Head Studs
BC 280 Cams
BC Valve springs & Retainers
Eagle Con Rods
Wiseco Pistons (9.0 CR)
Cometic HG

Should I upgrade the Valves also?

As far as the turbo goes, I was leaning towards the 20g.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

-Frank

Everything you have listed will definitely build a good strong motor that will be able to handle the power. Upgrading the valves wouldn't be a bad idea either. A 20g might get maxed out before you reach the hp goals that you want. I would consider running a bigger turbo and definitely a big fuel set-up.

What size injectors?

Yea a walbro FP seems like a must as well.

It all depends on what turbo you're using, what you're using to tune, and how much money you want to spend. An afc can't really handle injectors bigger than 650, but you're definitely going to have to go bigger than that to get into the 500+ hp range. I would say 1000s would be be able to get there easily. What are you planning on tuning with?

Don't go overboard. Make sure you have enough $$$. People who usually go that far are rebuilt their blocks and head to a stage 3-4 let alone that is not all. You have to upgrade fuel system, suspension, drive train, transmission, tuning, etc... I for one went through with that and I haven't finish yet. I still have to work on tuning and other minor stuff.

I'm not too familar which tuning system to get but i've read that DSMlink is pretty soild. Unless i've read wrong?

Lol, it's better to be safe than sorry. I'm pretty sure i have enough money to finish the build :)

DSMLink is definitely a good tuning program, especially for large injectors that you will be needing for 500+ hp.

Okay, but you're looking at at least $10k for the obviously things like stage 3-4 block, head and rebuilt transmission. For the rest like supension, fuel system, drivetrain, etc... it just depends on how far you want to dig in your piggy-bank. But just a remainder to have a 550 whp car you have other stock engine parts bite you in the a$$ almost everyday. I'm trying to get up there but every time I put down more hp something goes wrong.

I have a friend who owns a performance shop so i'll get a decent deal on the parts. As far as labor goes i'll have to search around the forums abit more for a local yet reliable shop.

However you're right around the neighborhood of what I anticipated for this whole project.

Alright Guys,

I went ahead and bought the following parts:

1 Step Colder Spark plugs (NGK)
BC 280 Cams
BC Valve Springs and Retainers
Eagle Rods
Cometic HG
ARP Head Studs
BC Valves (Intake/Exhaust)
Wiseco Pistons (8.3CR)
750cc Injectors
255lph FP
Misc. items- new t-belts etc..

My friend said he'll get back to me on DSMLink (dont think he has heard of it before).
I'm also still undecided on which turbo.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

kinda scary that your building this car with a friend of yours, and neither of you guys know of DSMlink. Tuning will be the most important part of your build, if its not done correctly, you will never reach your goal, or even worse, blow it all up.

Ive been through the only EFI Training school in the world and I had never heard of DSMLINK until I got to looking here. Was actually taught that MAF was not the ideal tuning method for turbo cars. However it seems with tuning the important thing is to use something you are comfortable with or know someone that is. If youve ever seen Motec you know how systems can be picky to certain parameters and settings.

Consider looking at EMS they have a few systems that offer nice control and are fairly cost effective although you have to build your own harness.
Being a fan of speed density myself I was researching the Maf transator pro. Apparently you can sub in a GM MAP and IAT for the stock MAF and tune SD style through the controller or via laptop. However a keydriver chip will be needed to control timing.
Really depends how much $$ you want to spend and what your tuner is comfortable with nothing personal but I would find a good tuner and use what he is comfortable tuning.

Maybe I typed it wrong. I'm getting the parts through a friend of mine and when i asked him for the DSMLink he said he would get back to me regarding that. I think the reason he said he would get back to me on that is he isnt familiar with that unit. If he is unable to get the DSMLink i'll just buy it online.

Im not going through him for labor. Im going to RRE for all the labor and tuning. They're one of the most reputable shops in SoCal so I think i'll be alright.

After a long day at work, I come home and to my surprise there was my box sitting there!

Im still waiting on the DSMLink, and wideband gauge. Should be here tuesdee!
(sorry im a little excited)
