what could this be caused by? it doesn't look horrible... right?:(

and what's with the sharpie numbers? does this mean it was rebuilt? and there is maybe a millimeter or less of play side to side

Looks like it was run without an air filter for more than a few miles. That thing is smoked. I'd get rid of it.

The wear looks accumulated on the leading edges. It doesn't look like just one object got sucked in.

Depends on how unbalanced it is now. If you keep an eye on the shaft play, and by that I mean check it about every week or two, you should be able to drive on it okay. If you check shaft play and the fins are scraping the walls of the compressor housing, or you notice the shaft play getting worse, time for a replacement.

Also, check to make sure your filter is intact and that no pieces are missing from it or the intake tube or the MAS.

it can be rebuilt but ## gonna need a im guessing just the one compressor wheels but you miz well get in and out. When i sent my 16G to Chicago to be rebuilt it was like 385, just for being rebuilt i supplied all the parts. when they got done they called and okayd it to be balanced. that was another well close to 200. so really its ## choice rebuild it or upgrade.

cheaper to rebuild. ya if he does it him self maybe but then theres always a chance that it wont be balanced. idk you can rebuild and it could be just like brand new, but it could also go the other way.

No need to freak out over a little bit of damage to the leading edges of the compressor fins. I've had customers run turbos that had half of a fin missing and they ran all season. Sounded a bit strange, but they still boosted fine!

Every turbo is different....the size of the wheel matters, and it also depends on the amount of unbalance present in the turbine shaft due to the location of the damage. For example, a small chip located very close to the locknut would cause far less unbalance than a small chip at the very outside of the wheel (the area visible when the compressor cover is removed.)

The thing to do is keep an eye on the up/down shaft play. This is the first type of play that will appear when the turbo is out of balance because the wobble places a load on the journal bearings and causes them to touch the center housing where they would normally ride on a thin film of oil.

Drive the car for a bit, then shut if off and check the amount of up/down shaft play carefully using your fingers not long after the engine is shut down. This ensures that the journal bearings are fully coated with oil to give an accurate measurement. The up/down shaft play should be .010"-.015" by measurement; any more and you're risking the compressor wheel contacting the housing....

....which I guess isn't that big of a deal because the wheel's not in that great of shape anyway! :p

Kidding, kidding. Seriously though, too much unbalance will lead to too much up/down shaft play which will cause the wheel to touch the housing which will eventually bend the turbine shaft. It will just keep getting more and more expensive the longer you run it.

But in your case, I think you'll be fine. Just keep an eye on the shaft play! :thumb:
