I have question for those with experience on this. How well can a stock tranny and transfer case hold up? I know transfer cases have a problem with seizing up and all. I am looking at putting a stroker engine in and will not be reving at the high RPMS, but am looking at have considerable horsepower.

So my question is with a 2.4L how much horsepower would you feel comfortable containing with stock tranny and transfer case?

Thanks for your time.

Well if it's a 2g tranny you should be fine but i'm not so sure on the transfercase if your planning on doing some hard launching
The stock 2g tranny can handle a good amout of abuse..

1g awd. last season my car ran a consistant 12.0 pass on a stock tranny, and transfer case. the only problem with these trannys are the diffs. so try not to launch at every light. keep it for when you need it.

It really doesnt madder how much power you make. People have blown the stock center diffs on stock hp and oem clutches. If you put to much load on the stock tranny the 2 gear spider diff can fail.

Also if you have a 90-91 with a 3 bolt rear end, that can be prone to failing. I would know I just broke my rear left drive shaft on a 5500 rpm launch with a little clutch slip. This was pretty much from my 2600 act clutch, not from the power the car is making. The transfer cases have been known to handle over 600whp but can fail also if abused.

If you are making over 300lb tq I would recommend a upgraded tranny with a 4 gear spider center diff and torrington bearing.

If that tranny ever fails I would look into www.jackstransmissions.com He has very competetive prices and awesome work.

If you ever have your transfer case off take a look at the splines in it and the tranny. If they are getting sharp on the edges that is a sign of wear and going to increase the chance of failure. So far my car shifts pretty good but i havent really launched it hard yet.

I have had great luck with my trans an trans case. Hundreds of 5000+rpm launches and no problems.

This was after a fresh rebuild. These transmissions are very strong.

I think the key is how the driver launches the car. You can make them live a long time if you pre-load the clutch.:thumb:
