just wondering how long my 99 gst spyder turbo will last before i need to replace it and which kind of turbo should i get if i need to replace the stock???Thanks!

Thats a pretty broad question. Youre turbo will last as long as you take care of it.

And youre turbo should be picked for your goals. HP and what type of car your looking for. (street, strip, road racing, etc)

Do some searching and welcome to the madness.

^^^ i agree with Absolute, HP goals are what you need to consider...along with how much time and money you wanna spend on various supporting mods. i.e. FMIC, FPR, Injectors, SAFC, DSM link, fuel pump ect. Just some things to consider. Oh and check your turbo for shaft play whenever you have some free time, if its solid and you dont beat on it i would say you could make that turbo last a long time. Some suggestions though by personal preference i really enjoy the Evo3 16G turbo makes great power and spools up perty quick capable of producing 380hp ( with support mods).

Mine lasted 95K miles on an absolutely stock car. Not even a filter.

I replaced it with an Evo3 16g and have not looked back since :D I'd say go with one of those unless you have goals of more than 350hp. Reliable, well built genuine Mitsu part.

i love my stocker, but as soon as im done with the supprting mods, im going to the 16g or bigger (###### 16g)...but theres still nuttin wrong with having a nice little good performing stock turbo for the time being...

How hard are you going to beat the living shit out of it?

Or, how carefully are you going to drive it?

Some things depend on you.

Of course, if the guy you bought it from beat it like a rented mule, it may already be dying.

I replaced my stock turbo at 130,00 miles. It still was in fine shape. It was in a completely stock woman driven car.

Ive got 168,000 on my stock t-2small and its still boosing fine. I only run it at 12psi. Btu i have been known to beat on it sum running 16psi. But to this day it only has a samll amount of shaft play. And ive had the car since it had 107k on it. the guy before me bought it new and just drove it to atlanta every other weekend. But he also beat on it but it was still pretty stock when he had it. But like everybody has said Yours could last you a short time or last you for a long time depending on how you take car of it.

I've got 110K miles on my stock turbo, and it is still going strong, also it gets BEAT at the drag strip 4 times a year.

I've probably made over 100 passes in the past summer.

Mine was still going strong at 140,000 miles and I didn't exactly baby it. The T-25 is a great turbo for the street. Unless you are building up for some type of motor sports, I would hang onto it for as long as possible.

Another way to phrase that question might be:
How long can I run my stock 2G until the urge to upgrade the turbo overcomes me?

Being a long tempered old motorhead I replaced my still good T-25 at 183,000 miles.

I dk about that. I have mixed emotions. But hey atleast it is cool. LOL jk. I got it for free and i feel better walking away from my car on a hot day after some hard pulls around the neighborhood knowing what a turbo timer is designed for. My 2 cents. Defiant is very smart and i trust exactly what he says but when i was at paul volk's (99gst_racer) house he didn't criticize me on the timer. he said that "will save your turbo" not "that will do nothing".

I totally agree with you in that I would rather play it "safe than sorry".

And you won't find too many people making a statement like that. :p

No, that statement is sadly missing from this site. However, it's an extremely accurate one. No, the T-25 isn't much use for sintering the lanes at the local drag strip, which some DSMs spend as much as a week's worth of hours in their entire lives doing.
However, for all those times not at the track, when dropping down a gear to make a pass around traffic on a two lane road, or bringing the car up to speed to merge onto a freeway in traffic, or for getting a fairly good gas-mileage-to-performance ratio, and all the rest of the real world we commute and travel in, the T-25 is a very good choice. It spins up early and quickly, it has a good flat output on a two-liter motor over a broad rev band, and it doesn't beat the living shit out of the rotating assembly of the engine.
It gets breathy at 5500 RPM, and if you're not shifting before there on the street in the first place, you probably don't realize you're on the street. It's not a racing performance turbo. It's a street performance turbo. There's a reason it's been used on so many different manufacturer's cars.

My stock t25 blew at 80k miles. However, I really beat the hell out of that turbo by maxing it out. Compressor turbine chewed and about half to an inch of shaft play. HEHE!
