Picked up a '91 Talon TSi bout a week ago for $300. Doesnt run, turbo was gone. Almost every wire that was hooked up to te engine was disconnected and not labeled so Im having a hard time gettting it all back together. This is my first DSM and the first that Ive worked on. Two main wiring problems are on teh throttle body and oil sensor wires. Now with the throttle body when I picked it up there was a sensor that was just zip-tied out of the way. Ive come to find that its the TPS, but the place its supposed to go to theres anothere sensor there. I cant find anything to tell me what it is.

Then theres the other side of the throttle body. Theres a wire that I cant find a place for that looks just like the idle switch wire.

Under all that coming from the harness is another plug I cant find a plug in for. Its purple at the end, kinda looks like the MAS plug.

Now moving to the lower part of the engine, after some research I found that the three extra wires from the alternator harness (if you will) go to the power steering pump, oil pressure sensor, and oil light gauge. Only problem is I dont know where the two oil sensor wires go.

And lastly from the harness that goes to the thermostat housing I have one plug left without any place to go.

Well those are my little problems, any help is very much appreciated. If someone could provide pictures, that would be great to, Im better with seeing than hearing.

You have a clusterf$#% on your hands. Thats a 90 throttle body on a 91+ car. You need to find out what ecu is in the car to see what wiring changes, if any, need to be done. All those wires are for the 91+ throttle body.

Just search around.. There's plenty of threads out there about identifying ecu codes.. If in doubt go to motoguysgarage.com.. Just tell them you need to make sure you have the right ecu.. They'll run the codes and find out for you

+1 ^^^^^

and for the wire just hanging out above the shift linkage, it the temperature gauge. it goes on the thermostat housing just underneath the 1/2" rubber coolant hose. and i believe the blue wire goes to the oil pressure sending unit (the gauge) and the yellow wire goes to the oil lamp switch closer to the filter.

Thanks for all the help. I wonder if they ever had it working with the '90 TB. Im gonna go check, but I dont even see how they hooked the wires up unless they somehow spliced into the '91 harness. And what would make them switch to that TB? There isnt any gains are there? I'll just see If I cant pick the right one up off ebay or something.

Yea no kidding man, thats what I was thinking. I had myself a look and it doesnt apear that they messed with the wiring. They simply left the sensor where the TPS is suppossed to go and the other two wires are connected to that left hanging on the other side. The factory harness is plugged into the ISC (I believe) and the idle switch. Once I get my new FPR I'll see if its even able to run with it on, but I'll most likely find the correct TB.

Im not seeing where the blue wire for the oil pressure connects to. I could only find the oil lamp connector, since its like right there in the open.

Honestly I dont know if all this will get it to run. I bought from a guy who just bought it for the turbo and alternator, and the guy he bought it from said a valve was stuck. So Im going to see if it'll even try to run. Might need a new head or engine, who knows? Still, for $300, I couldnt pass it up.

My suggestion would be to buy one that actually runs, this way for $300 you have a parts car to rip things off of if they break on the working car. You could even rebuild the engine, tranny in the non-working car for racing and wouldnt have to worry about not having a car to drive while the work is being done:thumb:.

Unless you have the time, patience, and interest in getting this one to run. In that case :thumb::thumb:

Well I have time and patience, and since my plans are to go an automotive career, interest is no problem. What is a problem is money.
And besides the engine problem, this thing is in really good shape. It has its share of dings, and key marks, and the interior could use a good cleaning, but its in pretty decent shape, so I'd hate to use it as a parts car anyway. This little DSM was lucky. The guy I bought it from was planning of scrapping it for $200, had it loaded up and everything. But he figured it was in too good of shape so he thought he'd see if anyone wanted it first. Touching aint it? ;)

I JUST got my car running and driving yesterday. So I can understand the frustration especially when I found out someone had all the vacuum lines completely screwed up. But everything fixed now I have to rebuild the tranny...weee. Anyways... i'll see if i can throw up some pictures of where the sensers go for you... let me know if you need a certain sensor... and i'll see what i can do. I'll go take a picture of the oil sensor set up here in a little bit and re-post it

you could just get a 1991 throttle body and put that on to save a little agggrivation... also if you have a 91 car and its a 90 engine.. which is a motor job i did on my friends awd tsi... we put all the 91 stuff on the 90 motor to save all the grief.. that is something you may want to look into.. any parts that dont hook up correctly may be from a 1990

there is one senor easy to see and then other sensor actually goes on the little tip of the bell housing that is on the oil filter assembly. it just pushes on. i couldn't get a gopod enough angle on the picture to show it.

Well got a little bit more on this now. I managed to get it to fire up!.... unfortunatly its for only a couple seconds at a time. Its starts up, idles for about 2 seconds, then dies. If you try to give it gas, it dies. Now what Im wondering is if not having the correct throttle body and not having that TPS connected is causing this? Anybody have experience with this?

And another thing, found two connectors with purple plugs coming from the harness behind the intake manifold but cant find any place theyed go to. Do they go with the '91-'94 throttle body/intake manifold?

I've found out that Im going to need a rebuild. I had a friend try starting the car up so I could see what was going on under the hood, and lo-and-behold, really bad blowby. So now Im looking into getting a rebuild kit. I only have a month left of class, last day is the 18th. 3 days a week for almost 2hours.... this is a big time crunch..... well I may as well try right?

Heck ya! half the fun in owning a DSM is working on it.. Let us know if you need any more help.

Well the rings are definatly bad. Readings were 55, 90, 125, and 55. Ouch. Started disconeccting everything today. If everything goes well, Im hoping to have the motor pulled tomarrow. Otherwise I'll have to wait till Christmas break is done to do anything. I plan on just lifting out the engine without the tranny... hopefully that works out alright for me.

Good luck with it. She looks like a beauty. Thanks for saving one. These dsms are such cheap speed that people abuse em like a hammered girl you met at a bar, wham, bam ,thank you, maam. Then they junk em. Thats why it's getting hard to find parts. Especially for the 90.

hey I got a question/ helpfull thing for this guy if it will work. Ive got a TB off a 93 but its a NT if it will work ill give it to ya since your a Wi DSM brotheren if it doesnt work sorry to get your hopes up

NICE DEAL for $300 no matter what - My guess would be someone pulled Connectors in anticipation of pulling Head to fix the "STUCK" Valve - Personally I would have checked the Timing Marks before worrying about any Connectors, because if it's jumped Time, & it most likely has - You'll be pulling the Connectors back off anyway as YOU pull the Head - Within all likelihood that's not 'blowby" & not bad rings that's mistiming.

From everything I've ever read you'll be MUCH happier if you DROP the entire Motor Tranny Assy DOWN - OR - Pull Tranny & then Motor UP - Good Luck~!

Well I wasnt able to get it pulled today. We had some Christmas Orchastra thing that cut our class hours down, so I didnt have enough time. I actually cant wait till I get back form Christmas vcation, just so I can get that ting pulled.
Well a little bit on the car.... there is no way they didnt have this motor out at one time. Its missing the rear motor mount bolt and a bolt that attatches the tranny to the engine. So I'll have find some of those.
I dont think think there is anything wrong with te valves. Besides the fact that it was billowing smoke because of those rings, it still ran fairly well. My instructor agreed that there didnt seem to be anything wrong with them either. We'll see on the teardown.
As for lifting the whole thing out, I thought about that, but I didnt like the idea of having to disconnect everything from the tranny. And I at least know people take the engine out w/o the tranny so Im going to go that route. Im alittle dissapointed I wasnt able to get it pulled, now I have a wasted week I couldve been getting things done. Oh well, Christmas is almost here.
I do have a few side projects Im doing for the Talon tho, if anyone would care to see.
Im doing a custom grille piece, and a hidden MP3 player (Zune) holder. The holder is being made out of a spare broken ash tray that came with the car.

Yes it will..It is a good upgrade actually because of the restrictions of the TB elbow on the turbo model. The only thing you will need will be some sort of coupler to make up for the elbow...big_d
