Everything I have been reading about this says that it is possible. But I have been searching and can only find a wiring diagram for a 1g to 2g swap. The color on the sensors are not the same and I was wondering if the wires came out of the sensors in the same order. When I do the wiring I will do a VFAQ to show the steps but any input would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
With the 90 you are stuck. It and the Hyundais are the only ones that use that sensor (photo eye) 91 and up have a totaly different wireing harness.

If he can solder it can be done. Both Hall Effect and Optical sensors put out a "square wave" signal so they are essentially the same in their output and interchangable if you can solder on the plug as needed, or just hardwire it without the plug.
First of all...Possible to do what?

As for the wire order coming out of the sensor, I'm almost 100% sure they do come out in the same order. What sensor do you have, the green cap or the black cap?

I have one of each at my shop and can check tomorrow if you can wait just to be certain. Either way, hooking the signals up backwards won't hurt anything, it just won't run.. just make sure power and ground are correct..

Can you post a pic of your sensor? But, i guess more importantly WHY are you wanting to change them? Is yours bad? There's no improvement in performance by switching from Optical to hall effect or internal reluctor.

But in the same way, If it aint broke dont fix it. When or if it screws up make the change or just get a spare for if it ever does fail.

That's why i'm wondering why he's even wanting to do this.. Makes no sense unless that's the only sensor he can get and his car's current sensor is bad leaving him stranded. That's why in my first post i asked so much about his intentions/reasons

Actually, I'm planning to do this swap as well. It seems like it would make little difference, but apparently switching from the olive-top '90 optical CAS to a 93-94 black-top Hall unit helps reduce or even eliminate idle misfires/sputters, as well as some WOT 'stumble' issues, along with increased steam-death resistance. The olive top optical unit is yet another substandard bit of the '90 model year 'package' (along with the rest of the subpar electronics design/gremlins).

Unfortunately, though I have spare pigtails from the '90 CAS and '91 harness, I don't have a wiremap to splice them together properly and make myself an adapter, rather than chopping the '90 harness and putting the '91+ connector on directly.

The hall effect has faster signal rise times, is more reliable, and the signal pulse starts at the exact same place every time (doesn't move around slightly) than the optical one.

Good info, i wasn't aware of that. I've never experienced any fluctuations in timing on the green cap models, but i run a black top becasue i think it looks better LOL

My CAS is bad, or at least is throwing a CEL, which is why I'm wanting to change to the black top hall effect one. I have a spare, so I just wanted to make sure that it uses the same sort of signal so that the 90 ecu would be able to read it. But I appreciate the input I will actually be doing the change in a few minutes so I will let you know what I find out.

I just hooked up my 90s harness and it appears to run in the same order. The power wire to the hall effect sensor appears to be a little larger so I will keep my eyes open for any signs of insulation melting. Also the yellow wire on the optical sensor is a black on the hall effect type

I"m going out now to install and test hopefully all goes well. :thumb:

It will be fine, just hook em up right. Like i said earlier, they send out the same type of signal (square wave) so the ECU will recognize it and the car should run fine.
