HI everyone, i just recently purschased a 91 talon tsi(the awd) and i have a few questions. I bought the car for 2100, it has 200k on the body and 65 on the motor, it also came with a boost controller and a safc(what is an safc?). They are electronic made my Apexi i believe. Also i just started it and it made a high pitch errriii noise for like 15 seconds and then went off. Also because of the placement of the Apexi electronics, the car has no stereo so what are my options for getting a stereo in their?
I plan on taking pictures in a little bit so don't worry. Any advice or answers to my questions would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. Im kind of happy i didn't get the 88gt that i was about to get instead of this talon.

The SAFC is the apexi super air flow converter, this device is used for tuning the cars air fuel ratios. As for for the stereo system just remount the apexi electronics and you will have plenty of room for a headunit.

When it made the high pitched noise did the noise stop after 15 seconds or did the car shut down?
In regards to the afc you can move that anywhere you want to as long as the wires reach.

The afc is used to alter the readings the computer sees to change your fuel injector settings. It is used for tuning the car to run optimally.

While you check out that belt you should go through and do all of the basic maintenance on the car.

Always go over the car and make sure all the maintenance is done on the car and like everyone else said the safc can pretty much be moved anywhere in the car as long as the wires reach. The squeeling is more than likely a worn or loose belt and should be tightened or replaced. Spend the money on a haynes manual and download the FSM for your they are helpful. Spend the time and search on the forums as most of the questions you are going to ask have been answered already. Good luck with everything and let us know if we can help you in any way. :thumb:

have alternator and power sterring checked out too, see if you can post the settings of the safc on hear but do not change them, as well as listing every modification you know of, theres no point in putting in an afc without some other parts

I agree with the above post, there is more to your car than meets the eye. You may not know much, but you will be growing into a very knowledgeable person very soon. It is very important to read everything you can about your car, everything you could ever want to know about your car has been covered, and neatly archived in several different places. I cannot emphasize enough how covered these cars issues are. You need to seriously get on the maintenance with all those miles. Then, make it faster!:D

Ok thanks for the great advice, and yes the noise does go away after 15 seconds. Just found out the turbo leaks oil so that kinda sucks. And my friend with a 3000gt vr4 drove my car today and said thats it not boosting, i then called the guy i bought it from and he said the apexi boost controller setting a was set to zero because setting b was set to 15. Is this bs or is their some truth to it?

Anyways the guys bringing down extra parts sometime this week so thats a good thing. Any recommendations for upgrades in turbo, alot of people have said to go with an evo 16g. I don't plan to race anytime soon because im still learning to drive it well, but i would like to have the ability to do so in the future. And how bad is a turbo oil leak? The guy i got it from told me that the turbo is old(after i bought it a day later :D).

not sure about the 0 boost setting and 15lb setting....there are such boost controllers that have dual stages. such as described but for the turbo i recommend either another 14b which is what you have now assuming its a 5spd, if its an auto you have a 13g, which then i still recommend a 14b, or a 16g since your not after big HP numbers now. resell value is almost what you pay for a used 14b assuming it doesn't have shaft play or leaks........or you could have that turbo rebuilt depending on funds.

im selling my evo 3 16g 550cc injectors and 190 fuel pump, thats a good start for your car, i would say work the kinks out and and go with a similar setup, its user friendly and there is rooom to make alot of power untill you go really big, these cars can not just be built over night and everything compliments each other, start small and work up, a 50 trim on 6 psi is pointless when you can run a 16g at 16psi, just let me now if your interested in the setup ill probly sell it cheap, that goes for anyine interested

if your looking for a bolt-on turbo upgrade, go for the evo3 16g... my friend put a new one on my car before i bought it off him, and i loved it... great for daily driving, minor racing, and heck merging onto a busy freeway :)

best way to find out if his bsin you, put it on setting b, and see wot its boosting? Is there a boost gauge in the car, besides the stock one? if not, look into getting one. they're pretty easy to install, and iirc vfaq.com has a write up on installing one.

Definately from the sounds of it you are going to have to do some minor maintenance first, your money is better spent there than upgrades. Makes no sense to spend 600$ on a new turbo and then snap your timing belt. Second of all i would suggest spending some money on a few guages e.g boost, wideband, pyrometer, oil pressure, fuel prussure. It's always a good thing to know what going on under the hood when your driving. After that then i suggest buying a bigger turbo, i have an hrc super 16g and i love it, can't even reach alot of boost yet either and it pulls. Good luck with your car though, read these forums like the bible and always keep up with your basic maintenance. These cars are natoriously finicky but when they run right they haul

As lespaul and Evil mentioned, there's no point to an afc without additional upgrades and you might just be throwing things off if you try tuning with parts with which you are unaware. EDIT: +1 on the sensors and gages from oldman. A wide band O2 will help you figure out that afc bigtime.

Before buying another turbo, or any other parts, I suggest really diving into your car to make sure of your entire parts list. Ask the seller about a parts list, including models, numbers, etc, not just brand names and bring them back here for any extra input or what all these things mean.

As far as choices for replacing the turbo, the 14b and evo III 16g are your best choices for durable, solid performance. Someone mentioned earlier that they were quite certain their original 14b must have been "crafted by the gods" to withstand what he had put it through.

ok first it has 650cc injectors and a aem fuel rail to my knowledge. The boost controller is dual stage, just has three different settings you can choose from. The guy is suppose to be bringing down some extra parts like coilovers, timing belt, fuel and water pump etc. And as for gauges, it has air/fuel ratio, boost, and in the glove box pyrometer(what is a pyrometer for). Im thinking about getting oil and another one installed since there are two slots left in the glove box. Ill update everyone on a parts list when i speak to the seller again. And thanks for the information and advice.

There's a really easy way to tell between a 14b and a 16g. Just pop off the intake pipe and look at the fins on the compressor. The 14b has a bunch of single blades all around, the 16g has pairs of blades all around.

A pyrometer, in a chemistry lab, is an optical temperature sensor that uses a laser to read the heat radiation. I would guess it's being used for the exhaust temps (EGT).

It sounds like you've got a pretty nice piece on your hands. Don't forget that when you compile this information to complete your vehicle profile. ;)

Ok i will indeed. I believe its a 14b because he would of said specifically its higher and would have probably asked for more than 2100. Also i believe third gear is grinding, is their anyway to fix that?

Yes i plan on getting rid of those dumb stickers. Yes i plan on fixing that right headlight corner. And the first couple pictures were taken by him, the last three(better detailed) were taken by my treo 755p for those who were wondering.
