I recently bought a 90 eclipse gsx and im already having problems with it!!! yesterday i took it out for a test drive around my neighborhood (I didnt rag on it by any means) and as soon as i pull into my driveway it starts making this weird noise. I parked it in my backyard and popped the hood, the first thing I noticed was that my timing belt had been grinding on something. Aslo my a/c compressor belt ripped. when I checked my timing belt it was kind of wobbly, what could have gone wrong?? The car also doesnt have the timing belt cover on it, could that be the problem? I really need your guys help.

I had a similiar problem once where my ac belt had broken off and hit the timing belt cover and broke it and took a large hunk out of my timing belt. I just took off my timing belt cover (top part) and replaced the bottom part of it. I had to replace the timing belt and i never put another a.c. belt on just to make sure it wouldn't happen again. So it might be your a.c. belt, but it might also just be time for a new timing belt also. Do you know when the last time it was changed? I hope this helps.

Well the guy I bought it from said the head had been worked on very recently so im guessing the timing belt had to be new. It looked new. It looked way better than the one on my N/T. Its just more loose.WTF . Im really considering just taking the a/c compressor off.

with dsm's dont ever just assume that the timing belt was replaced because there is a very good chance it wasn't, especially just with having head work done, so I would hit up vfaq and do what it says for timing belt replacement. Use new belt, tensioner, etc..

If you lost an accessory belt and something is rubbing your timing belt I would first check for crank pulley separation.

Even if you can see that it is brand new, don't ever assume that it was installed correctly! I'll never ever make that mistake again.

This is very true. Never assume that it was changed I did that once before on with a camaro's clutch the guy got a new tranny put in, but they just swapt out the clutch and one day goin down the road. BOOM! it blew out of the transmission, I have no idea why it did it i guess it just had enough. So deffinately check the tensioner as AWDrivinit said. I would still take a better look at the timing belt also just to be sure. Good luck.

Yeah i was thinkin that there was something wrong the t/b tensioner. How much would that cost? Can i get it at an auto part store or do i have to get it at the dealership? also should i take it in to get it changed or can a backyard mechanic like myself do it?

No! it definately did not skip a tooth, thank goodness. but i havent turned it on since BECAUSE i DONT want it to skip a tooth. its all good though.

If the A/C belt shredded it probably made it's way into the timing belt. I've seen it happen countless times on cars without the timing cover on. lLok closely around all of the pulleys for pieces of shredded belt.
