Big question, I want do sell my 99 RS and buy a 2nd generation GST or TSI but after alot of reading arround I see that their engine is not so good (so thats what people say). They say that it gets crankwalk? so I was wondering how reliable are these engines? is 100-145K miles bad? will it need to be rebuilt? and is it worth paying 5500 dollars for a stock engine with that many miles? I don't know what to do, if its worth getting a high mile car. Thanks for your help guys :thumb:

well 145k miles is alot. I would look for one that has around 100k. But 4g63 engines are pretty cheap. They do last for a long time though. But crankwalk is rare. Every engine has its problems.

It looks like theres alot of you guys with GST's have high miles with no problems. Thats good enough for me to sell my N/T and get a GST, and if I have some problems Ill get a new engine for reasonable price like winterftbl said or maybe I can even try to build one up with the help of all you from dsmtuner forum :) that would be quite an accomplishment. Well thank you so much for your input guys, it helped me make up my mind.
Oh and one more question what should I be looking for in the car, like the bad stuff, anything in specific? I know to look at leaks and the way the engine sounds and body damage, but is there anything specific to these cars that would be a give away to being a p.o.s not worth buying? thanks for all your support guys, I owe you one. :)

Take off the intake snorkel going into the turbo and check for shaft play. Check all the basic stuff too, cv joints, etc. If you take off the oil cap, you can get a good estimate of how often they changed the oil by how the oil cap looks on the metal piece. That's just a few things, but I suggest making a list and bringing it with you. People might think its weird but it'll insure that you won't forget anything and it will let them know that you know what you're looking for. I might even go as far as bringing a compression tester.
