Okay so I'm about to buy this talon (as mentioned before) and I had trouble putting her into all the forward gears after a couple shifts (1st, 3rd, 5th). Seller said he had no issues on other test drives. So we took a look under the hood. After we fiddled around with it he discovered that one of the shift cables had rusted I believe. He ordered another and installed it himself. I said out of pocket expense was 200 so far. Got all the forward gears to work but lost reverse. Reverse was working when I drove it before so I believe its not the tranny's fault. He said the shift cable ended up being too long or something to that extent. Meaning everything worked perfect, but that one gear. We spoke at length about this and he agreed to spend the weekend working on it himself. If he can't repair it he'll let the talon go for another 500 knocked off the price because he just doesn't have any more money to spend fixing a car he's selling. So far I've managed to convince him to take a grand total of a grand off his original asking price.

My question is this. I'm going to bring the talon to the shop as soon as I get it. In the future I will do my own repairs but I really don't want to bother with this one right now. So what would be an estimated price to fix or replace that shift cable and have them reconnect (or repair) The maf and get it idling right while cold? I may just do the MAF part myself, not sure yet. Sounds pretty easy to do. I just figured it would be simple to have the shop do it while its there anyways. So am I really saving any cash on this deal? Or just gaining more headaches? Thanks

I used to own a auto 97 hyundai tiburon and i switched it manual. when i had that trouble all i did was adjust the nut at the end of the shifter cable in the car. even though there different cars check and see if yours has that nut

The cable itself is easy to replace, I did mine in about 30min along with some cursing but its a dsm, anyways, there are 4 clamps, transmission bracket, bracket on the firewall, one bracket under the radio, and then codder pins right below the shifter. All the bolts are a 12...(i think), just remove all the bolts, 2 pins, and then the c-clips...those are a PITA, I had to use a hammer and a screw driver to get mine started and then they pulled out. Once all of its done just pull it thru the firewall but watch your rubber boots and that they do not get hung up and rip them open.

It doesn't sound like its that bad of a repair. Can I achieve this with the extra 500 I saved as well as fixing the maf? The reason I want to avoid doing the work myself is that I work 12 hr shifts and I'm only really awake in the evenings. Plus its freakin cold out.
