At night when i open my drivers side door the only light that comes on is the round one around the ignition, but when the passenger side is open the rear view mirror lights come on and the under dash lights come on. Is this normal? Is there any way i can make the rear view mirror lights and floor lights come on when i open the driver side door?

Since it's obviously not a fuse (because the passenger door does it) that narrows it down to wiring, or just the button. Look at the black rubber button towards the bottom of the door frame. It comes out with 2 screws. take it out and ensure it is plugged in. If it is, pull the carpeting on the drivers side, and check the wiring. It's probably just a bad button or unplugged. :thumb:

No, just pop the plastic panel off of the floor, the carpet is held down by plastic strips. you shouldn't even need to remove your seat, but it'll make it easier to see/manuever everything. So, the ignition/key light comes on?? yeah, I think that rules out the button.

Just fixed this problem on both doors of my '92 talon.

Not sure about the '96, but on mine the switch works by taking the light to ground. In other words, the wire is connected to the car body through the switch plate and screw when the door opens.

This means there are two problem areas: the switch contacts, and the screw/plate where it contacts the body. My contacts were corroded and bent somewhat, and the plate was no longer making good contact with the car body (the screw was rusted also).

Once I got the screws loose (hardest part of the job; I used a 1/4" socket with a Phillips tip), it was pretty easy to clean the contacts and scar up the body under the plate with a wire brush on my Dremel.

if the light around the key comes on when the door is open - i would imagin that the pin switch @ the door is working properly. but they are troublesome. alot of times just unscrewing and screwing the phillips screw that holds it in will help it ground properly

just get a new pin switch at the dealer dont bother with the wiring i had the same problem and it was the switch
