I'm currently looking at a '92 laser, 120k on body, that has a "japanese spec" engine dropped in with 45k miles on it.

Can yall tell me the difference between this engine and the American version? what are the differences and benefits?

From seller:
Yes, it's still for sale. The Japanese engine has more horsepower than the American version. The previous owner got the swap done at ******. It included the engine, I don't think that included the transmission. I believe the turbo was replaced at the same time, but I can't tell because the reciept is too worn. The exhaust piping was replaced with a 2.75 inch pipe from the downpipe back. I have lots of service records for it.

Selling for $2300, good deal? what yall think?

Last time I checked the japan motor is the Cyclone. The intake is diff. and it will not work on US cars. For 2300 I would pass on it.

The engine's are identical internally. You can make the cyclone work with a little time and effort. I doubt it has the cyclone though, most people remove it and reuse the stock U.S. manifold

How can I check if its the real cyclone? Would it be worth it if it is?

Seller also says its mechanically sound. If it really is why wouldn't it be worth 2300??

It will say cylone on the intake manifold, but it doesn't make it worth more. It still has the same power as a U.S. 1g.

Like they said most likely they just used the stock mani. Too much work to make it work and it dont do much. The JDM motor is the same so dont let him sell you on that. Also he would know if he replaced the turbo so Im pretty sure he didnt. Check the turbo for in and out shaft play. Also have it compression checked, should be perfect with only 47k on it. I would offer him $1500 and go from there.

wont work you say?----BurntToast

What I mint was it would not work with out some modifications

It says CYCLONE on the intake manifold like GVR4592 said the block should say 4G63

Um, actually I've seen a few that don't say cyclone on the manifold, my father in law had one on his talon, and I will post pics to prove my point. The only real way to tell if its a cyclone is to look at the runners. You will see the primary runners, then the secondaries beside them. There will be 8 runners in all, also look for the "white box", and the actuator to open the secondaries.

Mitsu Racer, all the 4G63 series engines will say "4G63" on the block. The only way to tell whether its a turbo or not is to run the VIN number.

*EDIT*
Here is a pic showing the dual runners. This is the exact manifold i was talking about earlier. It even shows where the "white box" is, and it doesn't say cyclone on the manifold.

Yeah I forgot about that one, I actually have one sitting in my closet. That's the VR4 RS Evo manifold.
