My car is starting to have what I think is a rod knock (or so I've been told), I'm getting a light knocking from about 2000-3500 RPM, and you have to be somewhere between acceleration and deceleration. Would the for sure fix be replacing the rod bearings? The engine was just rebuilt and I can't afford to have it done again. I want to replace those bearings this weekend but I just want to know if that will actually fix the knock.

Thanks!!!

i wouldnt reccomend changing just the bearings. there is a reason why this happend, and that needs to be corrected. once you get it apart you can see what happened and find the cause. how much oil pressure do you have?

The oil pump was replaced when the engine was "rebuilt", the only thing that worries me is how much oil it uses. It has no leaks, but uses a lot of oil. The turbo hasn't been rebuilt, and assuming it the OG, has 200000 miles on it. I think the turbo has a leak, but I can't be sure. All I know is what I can hear, the car hasn't been missing anymore that 1 quart of oil. Do you think replacing those bearings and making sure the crank is ok would fix the issue for now? I'm trying for a temp fix because money is a big issue right now, thats why I've been doing all my own repairs.

If this will at lease fix the knock I'd like to get it done this weekend, but I wanna know for sure what the problem is before I start replacing parts, any ideas?

usually if the bearings are spun, or "bad" the clearance will be off therefore a drastic drop in oil pressure. it doesnt matter how good your oil pump is. i wouldnt just change the bearings, beacause you will probably be in the same situation you are in now (if that is your problem.) you need to get it apart, i am willing to bet that if you spun a bearing, the crank will need to be reconditioned.

how much oil pressure???

I would not trust the gauge on the dash worth anything. Are you 100% sure you are getting a knock or you are just hearing a "knocking" sound comming from the engine bay in that RPM range? I would not recommend just pulling the bottom end apart and replacing bearings without knowing 100% that it is the problem. Do a little more investigation and let us know.

K, I'm wondering if there is a cheaper way to do this, but I was referred to Japanese auto exchange to get a new motor, they want $2000 (shipped) for a motor from a 95 GSX w/ 30,000 miles on it. (comes with the original turbo too)

So, just wondering if there is an easier/cheaper way to get a new motor?
