I've never rebuilt an engine before so i have a question about buying the OEM overhaul kit from mitsubishi for my 7bolt stock motor.

Will i be able to install all the gaskets provided in that overhaul kit with out the help of a shop to press anything in or out? Or are there some things that will need to be pressed in or pressed out that i need to have a shop take care of? because if that's the case i figure i'd just have them do the whole thing and i'll just rip it out myself

basically when you rebuild an engine there are a couple of specialty tools you will need. If you have never redone an engine before or dont have a friend who has and is willing to help then i would just take it to a shop. The hardest part about doing an engine is going to be setting the ring gap and putting the pistons in with a ring compressor which is not that hard but if done wrong can mess things up.
Can i also ask what the reason for doing the engine overhaul is? Spun bearing, low compression?
Good luck if you decide too do it yourself but it isnt the easiest thing in the world and i spun a bearing when i decided to try my first time. It was a good learning experience because i had to redo it all over again with a new crank. Good Luck

Reason i'm doing it is because i've put 120k miles on my stock seven bolt it has not crank walked and is still good it's leaking a shit load of oil so it's on of the main oil seals on the front casing. i believe it's the seal around the b/s shaft or crank pulley. either way it needs to get done, my father has done engine rebuilds time and time again, he's shown me how to do the pistons/rods and that stuff i'm more worried about hte gaskets and seals. as for the internals i'm only replacing the pistons and rods.. i'm considering doing just the rings in all honesty but we'll see what happens i guess i really wish i had the time and money for a decent mildly built 6 bolt swap but i highly doubt it. oh and i'm also doing all the 120k mile maintenance such as belts/tensioners/ac/waterpump etc.

I rebuilt my son's engine and the only things I had the machine shop do is clean the block, polish the crank journals and hone the cylinders. It cost about $150.00. Unless you are changing pistons and/or rods, I can't think of anything that would need to be pressed by a machine shop. If you remove the balance shafts, you will have to remove, rotate, and press the bearing back in, however, it is easy and can be done yourself.

It would probably be a good idea to have the machine shop press in new valve guides, if you are rebuilding the head.

I have some recommendations:

1. Get a Haynes or Chiltons manual. Some have complained of inaccuracies, however, I found it helpful.

2. Get a factory manual on CD. You can find them on e-bay or here:

3. Download and learn the CAPS software. Download here:

http://www.stealth316.com/2-wincaps.htm

Not only is it good for finding part numbers yourself for ordering, I used the diagrams to find out where a particular size bolt went.

With those 3 things and reading hundreds of posts on this forum, my rebuild went rather smooth. If you get stuck, just ask. There are some pretty smart people here.

I see. thanks for the input. did you happen to use an OEM gasket kit? Right now i'm considering doing a piston/rod change to eagles and wisecos but since i'm on the stock 7 bolt i don't know if that would be prudent. Also, i already to know to label everything/pack everything together/take notes etc. etc. what i would like to know is what procedure do people on here use to rip out the tranny/engine assembly. do they drop the tranny first then rip out the engine, do they rip it apart all together, etc. thanks again for the feedback keep'em comin

I didn't use a "gasket kit". I looked up all the part numbers individually in CAPS and then ordered what I needed from a Mitsubishi dealership that offers a 25% - 30% DSM discount.

I recommend pulling the transmission and engine together.
