Hi all,

On my 2G GST, the shift pattern is a bit off-center. What I mean by this is first gear is up in the far left and fifth gear is literally smack dab in the middle, where third gear would normally sit.

What would cause this? What can I adjust to center it?

Thanks!

I have one of those ebay short shifters in my car. it has the exact same problem that you are describing. For some reason the spacer that the ebay seller provides you with is very large therefore it relocates the whole shifter towards the drivers side.

Did you purchase the car used?

This is a common occurence when a short shifter is installed. I see that you have not installed one, someone else may have.

Yes, I am the fourth owner of this car and trying to be the non-abusive husband :D

Interesting thought... how does the short throw shifter contribute to this? The stock shifter sits to the left but I *just* installed a genuine B&M shifter and Symborski base bushings and the pattern was still off-centered.

Its because the of that spacer. Theres really not much you can do about it that i know of. Mine is off center a bit also it wont effect anything.

My stock shifter sat a little bit off-center too though...

On my car, I took out the two black spacers/locaters between the cable bracket on the transmission (one was cracked) and now 1st is where 3rd used to be. I like it that way and I think the distance between 1 and 3 got shorter.

steve-o, that sounds interesting as well. Do you happen to know if there is a 'correct' way (read: found in the service manual) to adjust the mounting of the shift cables when the pattern is thrown off?

I'm not saying your way is ghetto... but is it recommended? :D

I never tried adjusting the cables, I just left them as is. I kind of like it how they are right now, it seems 1st and 3rd are closer to each other and fifth is the only thing i really dont like but has always been a strech anyway. If you want to mount them properly I can check to see if I still have the spacer that isnt broken and measure it to tell you how thick it is. Id do it agin if the chance presented itself and I have no intentions of reinstalling the brackets so Id guess I reccomend it but its not something I suggest as a mod.

:edit: sorry for the late reply
