Wasn't sure where to post this, hpoefully this is ok. My car had a salvage title when I bought it three years ago; the car wasn't in an accident as far as I know, it was just a theft recovery. Back in January I was in an accident that would have totaled the car, but it wasn't my fault so we used the insurance money and fixed it (probably should have used that as a down payment for something else, but oh well). Anyway, we filed the police report and all that stuff, but is there anything I need to do with the title? It was already salvaged, so does the accident change anything? The only reason I ask is because now I am considering selling the car to help with a down payment. I also realize that different states have different laws, but I wasn't exactly sure how to look this up and find the specific information I needed, so any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Josh

Not sure where you live, but if someone only wants the car for driving then the salvage shouldn't matter much. My first Eclipse was salvage and ran fine till I blew the tranny like a jackass. I've seen the salvage marking on DSM's for a keying. No joke. The only thing I think it states is an insurance company considered it totaled. Private party sell value shouldn't be too affected and if someone wants to throw it in your face find another buyer. simple as that.

Better check with the DMV first. If the other party filed the paperwork to total that car, they will have it listed as totaled and probably need a re-issue.
If the DMV has nothing, then the insurance company never filed the paperwork.

I have seen it happen both ways. But also depends on the state. Up here in MA they are sticklers.
Good thing is VT is a hop away. I can take anything there, register it and get a title, then MA has to accept the transfer.....
