Hello,

I recently purchased a 94 eclipse gsx
99 k on car,jdm motor with about 60K on it.

Has larger evo III turbo
3"down pipe aswell as all the way back

He sold it to me for $1000,i thought this was a good deal,i just had to sell my 04-srt-4 and wanted something awd to play with

Anyhow according to the owner it was diagnosed with a bad headgasket,Oil in the water,no water in the oil.The car starts up but wants to die unless you hold the gas a bit,while your trying to move it around it also spudders and seems like its misfiring.Doesnt overheat at all and when warmed up runs a bit better.
took to my local mech and he did a compression check,175 psi across all 4 cyls.plugs were really fouled,seems to be running rich.
No CEL or trouble codes.
no overheating or smoking unless you floor it then a little black puff

Possibly a huge boost leak somewhere?? Sorry i couldnt be more help. Good find though man. 1000 bucks for a gsx with only 99k miles... thats a sweet deal even if the car doesnt run at all. Anyways...Hope you find your problem quick.
 
The Idle could be your FIAV either bad or previously blocked off. It will be a stubborn whor untill it warms up alittle. Your obviously running rich the way you describe it, puff black smoke at WOT, fouled plugs.

I would change the plugs ( NGK Bpr7Es's gapped to .028) and wires. Get a new fuel filter and make sure all connecions are good under the hood. Battery, other electrical components. That should get your on the sputtering. Also re-set your TPS( could be off ) and like stated above...Boost leak test.

I have heard of headgaskets that are bad untill the car warms up and they expand and seal WTF I know but, I have heard of it. IF compression is good...I dont know what to say..are YOU seeing oil in the water and the other way around??

I know theres more, Im sure others will chime in.

having him put new plugs in but even he says he doesnt think it will fix it,now im backed into a corner.

dont know about a boost leak,its barely driveable unless your flooring it in every gear.its hit and miss and only at lower rpms,once it gets up there it seems to haul ass
from the stack of receipts that came with this car it seemed to be really taken care of,untill the last guy got it

If its barely drivable I would do a boost leak and maybe swap your MAS for a friends. It could be a bad boost leak causing this....or a bad ECU. You have to make a list and then go about fixing/testing each item untill the problem is fixed. Any CEL's?
 
i need to find a reasonable shop around me who knows a thing or 2 about these cars.

all else fails i guess its off to the dealership
 
175psi compression on all cylinders? That can't be right if it has the stock 7.8/1 compression. also were the plugs wet with oil or coolant or just fouled with carbon. have your mechanic pressure test the coolant system to verify a blown headgasket.
 
my problem is this car may have alot of motor work done aswell?I dont know,just have a receipt for a jdm 7 bolt motor for $1600,$600 stage 2 clutch and some others,

the plugs were dry,just fouled,like the car hadnt had a tune up in awhile.black in otherwords
 
spoke to 1 of the previous owners,He says the car had a boost leak problem in the past,Also says that the car had some of the free mods done to it.

See if he didnt pull the honeycombs out of your MAS, you could be all Effed up. That and a boost leak with no compensation...you can will run like crap. I would do those quick.
 
if these are missing are they expensive to replace?
The guy mentioned somthing about a box with some controls in it that made it run richer? or gave it more air?

sorry i sound like a idiot but this is my first eclipse

im use to my 04 srt4 with a warranty

very good point. when i bought my talon i soon realized that the idiot pulled both honeycombs out of the mas causing it to idle very erratic and would stall from time to time.
You cannot replace the honeycombs separately as they are part of the mas but if they are missing, this is most likely one of your problems. Check the classifieds as you can probably find one for $30.

that sounds like you have a maft with a gm maf. do you see a little black box under your hood that looks like this?

Thats also a good point. The maft can only be messed with if you have a Logger, but lets just get your car running correctly first. You will have to confirm you have that and also check to see if you BOV is recirculating...thats a sign of a maft or well....someone who likes the sound and wants to run rich inbetween shifts.

What would help if you got some shots of you engine bay and whats your vac reading at idle? You dont know if you have cams do you?

If your compression is decent and you just have oil in the water, then your internal oil cooler could very well have gone bad. It's an easy fix, cheap as well.

Also, I've heard of people that have hacked the MAS excessively and had problems with it. Only heard of it once or twice, but I've hacked mine as far as I could and it ran perfect. If you need a new MAS I'm selling mine and the filter for dirt cheap. PM me.

a buddy of mine had a problim kinda like that, rough idle, no power, car would die unless he kept the gas down, turned out to be a boost leak(intake manifold gasket) you would be surprized how shitty a car will run if it has a boost leak. other than that maybe ECU? any cels? when your car starts does the CEL come on for five seconds and than go off like its supposed to? does your factory boost gauge work? also try un plugging your MAS(mass airflow sensor) and starting the car, if it runs about the same it may be a bad MAS but the only way to really test that it to plug a known good mas into your car or plug your mas into a buddys good running dsm. cheak the free mods page on here and make sure that all the free mods are done to your car and make sure they are done right too! good luck
 
let me see what my car has on it first,
if its missing or damaged im sure i'll take it
