So I just bought a 99 gsx on Thursday. Giant step up from a gst. Any rate, I searched the forums and I came to the conclusion that it was wheel bearings, but I just want a second opinion.

So my front driver side wheel makes this squeaky/scraping sound...sounds like wet rubber rubbing against leather. The sound only happens when I hit bumps, apply pressure on the wheel, or turn the wheel. However, the acceleration isn't affected by it, the steering wheel doesnt jerk and it drives a straight line. Like I said, I believe its wheel bearings. What's your take?

It sounds to me like the tire is rubbing. Wheel bearings make a rythmic or a humming sound that may increase or decrease during hard cornering.

Haven't had the time to check..due to heinous work hours and it being cold and not having a garage. Where could it be rubbing at?

if you jack the drivers wheel up, place your hands at 6 and 12, rock the wheel back and forth (vertically) and if u feel movement, its your wheel bearing. to be sure, have a buddy apply and brake, if all movement stops with the brake on, u probally have a bad rotor or a brake issue, otherwise, it is your wheel bearing.

if colt is right, which is very well possible, look for marks on the inside wheel well plastic, you can also call petboys and ask them what tire size your supposed to have and it can be + or - 10 from what you have on the car now without rubbing.

I just replaced the driver's side rear wheel bearing/hub assembly, here is what mine sounded like for reference:

A constant wailing noise that increased in pitch as speed increased and decreased in pitch as speed decreased. The sound would get worse if I turned hard right (increasing pressure on the bearing) and of course would lessen if I turned left.

I'll say that when I got my 99 GSX, the entire front end was shot, both lateral and compression arms on each side and the tie rods. You can purchase a kit from Mitsubishi (check out some of our vendor sponsors here) for around $180ish (minus tie rods) and replace all of it yourself. The car drives X100 times better than before! In total I think I dropped ~$240 for everything and that was Mitsubishi ball joints/arms and Moog Tie rod ends.

actually..the culprit is rust... and a whole lot of it

that wud be the driver side strut

but in the engine..not a spot of rust. chances are, this had really bad rust before and just repaired it...but i got this bullcrap to deal with now.
