ok i just picked up a 97 gsx all stock. 153k miles for dirt dirt cheap runs a drives fine. its going to be my track car build. So far i have my ffwd full fuel kit with 255 pump sitting. Now i am aiming for 500hp or so just enofe to get into 10's for starters. I was thinking maybe 2.3 with hx40. The reason for hx40 is i have a buddy who builds cummins and i can get any hx series for so easy and cheap. Im still semi new to dsm's and wanted opions on what would be a efficient way to do that. Also is there anyway to put a 1g tranny in a 2g? my buddy has a shep stage 4 tranny outa his old first gen. any input would be great help i am only trying to do on 5-8k budget atm can it be achieved?

You budget will be too small unless you can pull off some very good deals. The engine alone will run you just about your whole budget. It may be possible if every penny is accounted for perfectly, but from what I have learned, everything doesn't always go as planned. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. I have that much money into my car and I have no where near the goal you have.

I'm not sure about the tranny question. I stuck with the 7 bolt.

You probably wont need to go to a stroker. It would help in order to spool the hx40 and make it more driveable on the street but you could also just build up the head and rev it to the moon. Potentially you wouldn't have to touch the shortblock at all to hit 500hp.
