Need tire suggestion fast.

I am running 17x7 ICW Racing DV-8 White wheels. My previous tire was a 205/40 17 Kumho 711.

I had a potholes take out 3 of my tires so I figured it was time to replace them with something thicker. I tried 225/45 17 Kumho 711s but my tire place couldn't put them on. They said they were too wide. I called up Kumho who informed they run DV-8s in 17x7 with those tires in that size just fine. So somethings not adding up.

So it looks like I need to drop down a size. Sadly I am on a tight budget. Between $70 and $90 a tire is what I am looking to spend.

I was thinking the Yokohama ES100s as they are at the upper limit of my range but come in a 205/50 17.

Does anyone have any suggestions. Potholes are really bad so I need a thicker tire then 205/40.

Sounds like your tire installer did not know what he was talking about. The general rule of thumb that I heard is that the rim width should be at least 70% of the tire width. At 7" and 225mm you are at 79%. That's a better ratio than stock 205s on 6" rims.

They sat there for 30 minutes trying to get the tire on. It progressed from:

"There really stiff and it's giving us trouble"

to...

"This one must be defective, lets try another".

and finally

"They won't fit. A 215 should fit but I don't know. You should probably use a 205."

They were using every tool they had, including crowbars to get them on.

Take your car elsewhere man. They obviously don't have a clue. I've got 17 X 7's wrapped in 235/45's. As for tires look into Yokahama Avid H-4's. They are a little more than you said you wanted to spend, but can you say 45,000 mile warranty?

i got yoko es100's 225/50/16 and they fit my rims fine of cours emine are 8" wide... but a 225 will fit a 7 inch rim no prob. and yes these tires are good, of course i only buy yokos... but they are the best ones i've had so far.

Update:

Well, its done. It was going to cost me the price of a tow truck to get the car towed somewhere else so I told them to go down a size and get it done. Z Rated 215/45 Kumho 711s fit. Done deal. Drove off.

For the trouble and my patience they offered to get me rims at employee discount in the future.

Thanks for all the advice. I greatly appreciate it. I will let everyone know how the tires drive when they get broken in. Plan to head to Bradenton strip and see if I can get into some AutoX.
