worn tires?

dont flame for this question. at out local track in epping nh slicks are not allow unless u run certain 1/4 time. and im not at the level so i cant use slicks. i was talking to a guy at work about that and he said that if i use very worn tires that they will almost grip as slicks, is this true or is he just talking bs

The idea behind slicks is that they are a very sticky compound that grips. The more surface area of that sticky compound the better. However, on street tires, the tread acts similar to cleats for sports. Also, while driving in the rain the channels direct the water out from under the tire to allow it to contact the road and not slide on top of it.

I feel your friend may be mis-informed. Prime example would be the fact that most people, on slick street tires, complain about not getting enough traction. Where those running "slicks" are concerned about getting TOO MUCH traction. This is why most people break axles and transmissions when running slicks. The failing component could not transfer all that that energy to the tires now that they actually grip. This is why many people would prefer to stay on street tires and learn how to manipulate the clutch and throttle to reduce wheel spin.
