alright, here is my problem.

I am in the process of doing an evo 8 brembo brake install on my 99 gsx. I bought a set of rims about 8 months ago and really like the look of the rims:thumb:.

the problem is that as i was doing the install on the front driver side i wanted to see if the rim will clear the caliper...and NO.:notgood:

should i sell the rims or just get a spacer. what are the negatives on using a spacer? what is a good size before needing to get longer studs? i am not looking for something too thick. i just want something that will help clear the calipers.

thanks

Spacing the wheel out to clear an arm or inner fender is one thing. Trying to clear calipers is another. The caliper sits up inside the wheel. So moving the wheel a little is not going to help. You will need larger wheels.

I'm assuming you're talking about the 18x8.5 ASA wheels you have listed in your profile.
Do you happen to know the offset of those rims? You can run a spacer and longer studs like many others do but I personally don't recommend it.

5mm is the max you can go on stock studs. If that is still not enough you need to get longer studs and longer lug nuts. If you have the extra cash laying around get HUB-CENTRIC WHEEL SPACERS, i know that H&R makes some from Mitsubishi's.

Unles there's a spot 5-15mm towards the inside of the wheel where the brakes will clear a spacer won't do anything for you.

I've attached a photo below. If the rim is rubbing in an area that angled or lower like where it's labeled "amount of offset from centerline" at the top of the picture, but clears back near the area that looks like the section they've labeled "back spacing" then a spacer will help.

If however it's still rubbing in the "back spacing" area of the rim then you'll need to get larger rims, although I can't believe an 18" rim won't clear a set of brakes that come stock covered by 17's.

With 18-inch wheels already, I think we can assume his clearance issue is in the vertical plane. This is a common problem when converting to fixed, opposing-piston brake calipers. The best solution would be wheels that fit. Spacers are an option. There is a long-running debate about using wheel spacers but when used properly, and with the proper length studs, you should not have a problem.

thanks for the reply, well i did the rear brakes and the wheel cleared the calipers. i am just going to get a set of 5mm hubcentric spacers for the front and see if it works and also if it looks good. if not i will sell my wheels and get a new set. i want to try the spacers first because it is cheaper to get it than new wheels. my wheels are still new. only used it for about a month.

Did the 5mm spacers help the rims clear the Evo Calipers? I am thinking of purchasing a Big Brake Kit and I too am worried about rim clearance issues. Thank you in advance.
