I want to stick 235/45/17 inch tires on my car and the rims that I want to put them on have a 40mm off set. Will this work from what I have been reading 42mm is about perfect but the rims I want do not come in 42mm, so again will the 40mm work and will it cause me any problems. Oh and the car has ground controlls and agx's which are set to as close to stock height as I could get them. Thanks

They may stick out a hair or 3. What tires are they? Some 235/45 tires are wider then others.

they are kdw 2's, I just found out that the rims also come in 42mm off set. What do you guys think will be better? I know some tire will stick out but I dont want it to look stupid please let me know guys.

I would go 40mm with 235s, you run the risk of rub. But the KDWs are a thinner 235.

I run a 235/40/17 (Hankook Ventus R-S2) on a 17x8+35. No rubbing issues, tires are flush with fender (w00t), so you should be okay.

For the record, I do have some negative camber dialled in (-.5* rear, -2.25* front). That's what's keeping them from rubbing on my fender. The car is lowered about 2" or so. Check my profile.
