Hey gang,..

Has anyone tried both the Hawk HPS (street) and AXXIS metalmaster pads and can give a comparison between the 2? I wanna put them on my 90 GSX with single front piston calipers (that sucks!) but with Brembo slotted/drilled rotors,..

I can get the AXXIS pads for 1/2 the price of the HAWK pads, but really like what Ive read about the "bite" or stopping power the Hawk pads offer,...

Anyone tried both already and give their honest review?

Kevin

I have the axxis ceramics and they too are awesome. Same bite as the metal masters but a little more heat resistant. Excellent product

I had Hawk on my older car (280Z with turbo swap) and it was great, never faded. Now on my talon, I run Axxis MM pads and it's little bit more dusty but stops pretty well. Almost as good as my Hawk pads were

dunno aobut DSM. but i had metal masters pads on my 91 jetta Gli 16v with other upgraded stopping stuff and it was worse than stock bescause of the pads. Hawk is awesome. Porterfield RS-4's or EBC greenstuff are awesome choices though. I will NEVER buy metalmasters pads for anything i own ever. bad experience :thumbdown

I'd say go with the Hawk pads - they're made by Porterfield - and I've been unbelievably happy with my Porterfield R4S pads. :thumb:

Or, you could just skip the middleman and go directly for the Porterfields ;)

I ran and liked the MetalMasters until I learned to left-foot brake. If a pad fades to nothing in 45 seconds of autoXing, I'd hate to know what happens in a more serious situation. I'm on EBC Greens now. They don't fade on me, but I do not like the feel. Should have gotten R4Ss.

I've never tried MetalMasters on the Eclipse, but I used em for track events on my CRX and they worked great... no fade ever, even after repeated, hard, high-speed braking.

Of course the car only weighed like 1,900 lbs., LOL...

I have Hawks on my eclipse, but I haven't taken it to a track yet. They work fine for my "spirited" daily driving, but I don't know yet how they are on the track.

Just be careful: when dead cold, the Hawks need a heavier foot ;)

If you plan on taking your car to the track, I wouldn't say metal masters are the best pad. I live in the hills and mine started fading pretty easily.

I've been considering these two pads as well (the Hawk HPS and Axxis/PBR MetalMasters). After reading several threads, am I correct in summing up and saying that for a spirited daily-driven 2G AWD, the MM's would suffice? Do they dust like crazy, though? I also read that the Hawk pads in general (as a brand) might chew through rotors... didn't sound logical to group all Hawk pads together, but that's what I read somewhere... hope someone can clarify! :)

Thanks!

Fred

I haven't tried the Hawk HPS's but I'm running Metalmasters with slotted/dimpled rotors. They stop pretty well although I get quite a bit of brake dust...I think I need to re-bleed my lines because I think it should be biting better. I repainted the calipers after doing the pads and rotors so I think I got some bubbles in there, I did bleed it but I guess not good enough.

If your looking for a good "street" pad then just get the Metal masters or even the ultimates. They can be bought for $34-$42 plus shipping. Just remember they will fade if you really know how to drive your car especially if you are a person who has good technical footwork. Forget about looking for a pad with low dust because any pad with more stopping power than stock will dust decent amount. Right now im using the axxis ultimates which i think are pretty good. They bit pretty hard even when its cold and still maintains that bite when warm and maintain a good pedal feel, but then again these pads will fade.
If you are serious about racing then I would think about pads that have a high temperature range, pads that can handle temps more than 1000 degs.
