If you wonder whether there is such a thing as a new (not remanufactured) starter available for these old cars - there are 2 brands available that I know of - Bosch 100% new, and BBB 100% new. I just bought a Bosch 100% new, and I'll tell ya it sure looks new to me.
Both brands are available from NAPA. The BBB is downright cheap.
Both brands have a good manufacturer's web page describing the product.
The Bosch for 1g DSM is Bosch part number SR298N. The N is for New. If there is a X on the end instead of an N, then it is a reman.
The pics shown on the NAPA webpage are wrong. So I'll post some pics of the one I bought below.
I got interested in this because previously I had a "new" Denso. It has already turned into a piece of junk after only about a year of not-very-often use. Up until a month or so ago there was a Denso web page describing their "new" starters for aftermarket. Looking at the diagram with the flags pointing to the internal parts, most of the flags said something like "inspected" or "tested" or "reconditioned". Sheesh. Obviously not new. Should have done my homework before I bought that one. That web page is no longer there BTW.
Ok here's some pics:
