I just bought a 95 gsx 2 days ago and notice that once in 10 uses the clutch grinds when putting in reverse, even though the clutch is floored. Why is this, and also how far down should the clutch be pushed in order to be engaged, mine starts at 3/4s to the floor?

Well first when you push the clutch pedal down youre not engaging it your disengaging the clutch and 3/4 is about right. Do you put it right in to reverse after pressing the clutch in? If so try giving it a second or so before trying to put in to reverse.

Mine does the same exact thing.. it dosn't do it everytime.. but like you said about every 10th time or so.. it wont go all the way into reverse and if i don't notice it and try and back up.. GGGRRIINNNDDD... but what i do is just push the clutch in and lift back up and then push the clutch in again, and on the second time stick it in reverse.

The reverse gear has no schycros like the other gears, mine does the same thing, so get around it i always shift in to 3 and 4 before putting it into reverse

Just my .02

You might consider looking at the clutch master cylinder to see if it is leaking. Mine does the same thing, but I found putting it into 1st or any other gear helps stop the internals from turning and makes it easier to engage reverse.

Regardless, the advice given should help out. ;)

damn i thought it was only me too. #@%#@%#@%#@% happens like half the time i go in reverse. sometimes it gets bad and i try like 3 times in a row all 3 times grrrrrrr grrrrrrrrrr. so i stop put it in 2nd then reverse. seems to line it up.

My car was doing this also and I was told it was a bad center diff so I ripped my tranny apart to put a spool in, and the center diff wasnt damaged. Now that pisses me off, taking the tranny off and apart isnt the funnest thing. Oh well I have a spool now!

hold the pedal down to the floor for 3 seconds, this lets all the revolving parts come to a stop since the reverse gear does not have a synchro. when i tear apart dsm trannies that have not blown up the reverse gear is always chewed up badly from this, take it easy, unless of course your racing a honduh in reverse, then it s ok.

When i'm on a hill & try to put it in reverse, it'll grind. Even if i'm rolling backwards it won't go into gear. Only when i'm on level ground does it get into gear. Wierd eh? Looks like i'm gonna have to rebuilt this 1g tranny in the near future. Doh!

Saber!...!...!
=oP

I guess I'll just be one more person confirming the "1st then reverse" theory... I never put it in reverse without the 1st... first.

With mine, if I slowly release the clutch, while it's in that purgatory of reverse, it'll slip into gear every time, then work fine. Seems to get into gear when the pedal is about 1/4 of the way off the floor. I used to grind it a lot... not anymore!

i have the same thing and i put my tranny in today.i was very upset about this.i go with the 4th/reverse deal before i put it in reverse and it works.
