Aloha,
I'm not much of a drivetrain guy but... I've been wondering what level of modifcation it would take to mate a honda transmission to a DSM platform, specifically a 1G T/L/E. Would you be able to efficiently adapt the transfer case in an AWD to accept the honda tranny. I know this seems sacreligous to some; however I am just trying to address the DSM transmission issues in a more cost effective manner than shipping my tranny from hawaii out to Shep or TRE. Over here honda's are a dime a dozen (where aren't they:rolleyes: ) so getting a few junk trannies for experimentation purposes shouldn't be too expensive. I'm not a big fan of hoda's for my applications but they do make a pretty stout box. If anyone has any info/input as too what would be necessary, parts, price, mods etc... Any and all input is appreciated, thanks.

"Anything is possible". However--Good Luck.

You'll be tearing Honda transmissions left and right, cutting casings and welding them back together (utilizing different pieces from different cases), swapping gearshafts from one to another, trying to find a viscous and center-diff to work with your car, and then finding out that getting the final-drive the same isn't possible.

My point: If you can't rebuild/build your own DSM transmission, how do you expect to be able to engineer your own transmission basically from scratch? I'd write this one off as a pipe-dream.

First off I doubt it has ever been done, or ever will be. Why you ask? Because a Honda tranny is not going to stand up to anymore power/abuse than a DSM tranny. Secondly the cost on this would be absoluty ridiculous to even want to attempt - unless you had tons of money to blow. Thirdly, shipping might cost a lot to have your tranny sent to TRE/sheppard/ect. - but you could always buy the 'internals' and find a local reputable shop to put them in for you... I would try all of my available options before you spend a dime on the Honda tranny...

DSSA,
I see your points, trying to find working dif's in a buch of junk trannies would be a bit**. My intention wasn't to "engineer" a tranny from scratch but to try and adapt what was already present. No, I have never re-built a DSM tranny; however, I do have some experience with bulding and adapting ChevyOMG trannies. Are the differences that pronounced betweent the two? Anyway thanks for the input, it's good to know that the idea is not feasible before I put any real effort into it. I guess the $1500.00 te send my box to Shep might be worth the cost after all.

just scrap the honda idea and send the trans to shepracing

Thanks for the input everyone; however, I believe the point has become moot, at least in my case. It looks like I will end up with an AT AWD, which brings up a whole different set of concerns and/or mods. The selection of DSM's is so limited here in Hawaii that I can't chance letting the one I found slip away... even if it is AT. Just one qualification, I am well aware of the potential of a properly modified and utilized AT; however, I have allways preferred a manual. Maybe this '92 GSX will make me feel different. Thanks again.
