Last week I lost 2nd gear on my 92 TSi AWD. I rarely drive it really hard, but it started grinding into second very often. I started double clutching it, and that helped for a while, but last week it started refusing to stay in second gear when I apply the throttle. Off throttle it will stay in second, but once I hit the gas it pops out into neutral. Any ideas? I can remove and install a trans myself with help from my stepdad, but I know next to nothing about working on the inside of one. Should I go used or get this rebuilt? I've seen some used 90-94 AWD transmissions in the 400-600 dollar range, but I've yet to get an estimate on getting the trans rebuilt. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think you'll end up paying about $400-$600 just to have it fixed. Who knows if there is additional damage & charge too? I think getting a used tranny for that much is the way to go since it will normally have some sort of a warranty...

You can always send your tranny out and have it rebuilt with heavy-duty internals if you race a lot...but that can get expensive.

I'm thinking of just spending the money and taking it to TRE, even if it means I have to wait several more months. I wasn't going to drive it this winter anyway...

poping out of second you must have done some serious damage in there i just had my box on the bench down to the nuts and bolts, actually its still there awaiting flywheel :( .So you would be looking at some pretty serious ware on selector fork slide hub and gear itself but never overlook the obvious like a detent spring.could be wishfull thinking.good luck.
