i was wonderind what the advantage is of doing the 3 to 4bolt rear end conversion. and also wondering what was the first year the dual piston calipers came with and what would i need to do the swaps!:talon:

i am not sure about the breaks but i think it was 92 and up, but with the rear end it is alot stronger. IF you hold the axels next to each other the shaft is alot thicker. They also atach with 4 bolts so it is stronger too. I think the spines that go into the rear end might be biger also. When i had mine out didn't compare them so i am not sure.

The brakes you are looking for came off the 93 or maybe 94 GSX only. they went from a 10" to a 10.5" rotor in addition to the twin piston caliper. The rear end you are looking for came out of the 92+ AWD dsms. You want to make sure that the one you get is an LSD also!:thumb: you will also need to get the 4 bolt cups and the axles. The reason that the 4 bolt is stronger is that the inner axle splines that go into the diff are 1mm larger in diameter... In the last two incidences that i saw a snapped rear axle... they were at a perfect 45 degree angle to the splines which is a perfect example of a torsional break in the structure. 1mm larger is a HUGE difference in torsional strength... that is why people upgrade to the 4 bolt.

However... the 3 bolt is very strong... We had a race car run a 12.1 in the quarter with a 3-bolt. The reason that 3-bolts usually break is due to worn out rear sturts and springs. Under a hard launch, the rear suspension bottoms out and the axles go under an extreme torsional load. "BANG" you just snapped a rear axle. If you don't have the money for a 4-bolt right now... i suggest getting stiffer rear springs and struts... if you're launching hard like that.

does it matter if its from a auto or manual? and so the 92 just has the single piston calipers? thanks for that info. i know someone who is parting a 92 out and am trying to get some info before i pick some things up.

the rear end does matter for auto and mtx trannys. They have diffrent gearing. The auto has a taller gearing in the rear end then the mtx. So make sure you get the right one. The breaks i don't see why they would be diffrent but i don't know about the breaks.

The bigger 2 piston brakes were phased in during the 92 model year. Almost none of the AWD had them at the beginning of 92, but almost all of them did by the end of 92.

If you have a SERIOUS race car and are looking for something bigger than the 4bolt, you could step up to a four or six bolt from a Conquest/Starion. The 1Gs had 4 bolts and 2Gs had 6 bolts. Diameters ranged from 30mm to 36mm. As a comparison a T/E/L has 20mm vs 24mm for 3bolt, 4 bolt respectively.

Diff is capable of handling 600-700 Hp.

Whoa, that's huge! More info, is the StarQuest rear end IRS, or is it a solid axle? Does it use any of the AWD rear end mounting points? Thanks.

Starquest rear is an IRS.
They have very similiar mounting configurations. How close? Can't say at the moment. But you'd be amazed at the commonalities between the them and 1G/2G cars. ECU packaging? Same. There are even more.

the star quest rear ends are i think the strongest that mitsu made. I don't think they will work for a DSM though. I have never heard of it being done. I belive you would have to mod the drive shaft to connect to the rear end you would need to get custom axels becouse the starion has longer rear axels. The 4 bolt should be strong enough if you don't dump your clutch. Shep uses a 4 bolt rear end and look how far it has taken him. IMO i don't know if a star quest rear end is worth it the money it would take to put in.
