I work at the mitsu dealership and one of the mechanics offered to do a complete tranny rebuild for me for $100 + parts. I know the gvr4 first gear is a popular choice for us awd guys .... does it just swap right in or are there custom fabbed parts that have to be ordered along with it? Next ... where can I buy better syncros for a good price? So far I have been seeing around $750 just for syncros alone ( aftermarket ) ... also ... are there any other mods I should do internally while I'm in there? The car should have around 400whp ... thanks.

For parts, try TRE. or questions regarding usage of the VR4 first gear.

Unless. you can get the parts he's got at a discount. (some of them are OEM)

well since I work at the dealership I get parts at 10% over our cost so it would be my best bet buying parts from there. Does anyone know if the gvr4 first gear swap is all oem parts?

Ok, just emailed them. Anyone have problems with gvr4 1st gear, double syncro 2nd and 3rd, and upgraded shift rails / forks? Anything else I should get while I'm in there. I just want a 1/4 mile car so no point in double syncroing 1st right? Should I bother with 4th? Seems like that gear is hard to miss the syncro since it's just straight down?

FYI: DSM tranny parts are pretty much all OEM items. all of the forks and such are scavenged from galant GSXs and galant VR4s. i think alot of the double syncro stuff came from evos... If you can actually get part numbers for the stuff - you could probably get this stuff for a good price. Believe it or not: the mitsu dealers really dont get the best prices... Considering that TRE and all of thoes guys get it wholesale: you might as well go with them - they should be cheaper. not to mention TRE has the experience and its worth it to purchase from them so you know you get everything you need.

True and not true. It will depend on what he is installing and where he gets it from.

The dealer. Yes.

Parts store. Yes and no. It's not always the OEM that makes surplus parts to sell to the supply base.

TRE. Yes and no. If he gets EVO shift forks, they are modified by TRE. Gear sets? Some are OEM, some are produced by TRE. Syncros? Bearings? Seals? They to, may be OEM or aftermarket.

Automatics you can get aftermarket clutch paks that oulast the OEM parts.

Call TRE and order the rebuild parts from him. I have spent a good amt of time talking to Jon during my rebuild. Alot of the parts he has custom made to outlast some defective oem orgional. He also uses aftermarket synchro's that are made out of a new material and last a bit longer and work better with new synthetic gear oil (bg microshift). Jon and ming assemble trannys all day long, they know what there doing.

I'll vouch for Jon/Ming also. 38K on my rebuild with not a wimper of trouble. Shifts like butter. I got my 90' daily driver rebuilt with double 2nd syncros and EVO shift forks. They did an awsome job and the price was great.

Two thumbs up for TRE!! :thumb: :thumb:

I emailed TRE and the problem is they don't sell their parts outright ... only if I have them install them too which is bogus. Why pay $500 labor + shipping, when I can get away with $100. I did find out my car is already double syncroed from mitsu for 2nd gear. All I want to do I think is put in the gvr4 first gear. Does anyone know if the gvr4 1st gear is an oem parts install or if there are custom parts specially machined for this to install as well? Thanks.

I don't mean to sound mean or anything, but $100 is not going to come close to cutting it. The input and intermediate bearings along (2 per shaft) are roughly $100, plus synchro's, needle bearings, slider (if worn), gvr 4 gear etc. etc. Jon helped me a while back with some special jdm gears i acquired. If you ask nicely, maybe Jon with re do your input and intermediate shaft, just pay him for parts and labor. Honestly though, if you don't know that more then just synchro's need to be replaced during a rebuild, maybe you shouldn't do it yourself. $500 isn't bad for labor, you'll pay at least the same for crappy cottman work. Just FYI

Have any of you guys touting TRE's experience rebuilt your own tranny? I'm sure there good. but.

It is not that tough, do it your self, just take your time.

Be smart! If you can get your tranny out by yourself, you can rebuild it.

If your in my neck of the woods I'll do it for $200+ parts.

e mail me if you have any ?

yup exactly ... however the though part is getting questions answered!!!! DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT PARTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE GVR4 1ST GEAR SWAP INTO A 2G GSX TRANNY???? IS IT AN OEM SWAP?!

What do you mean $100 won't come close to cutting it?!!?!? That's the price the guy that is doing the work and myself agreed on. $100 is for LABOR ... NOT PARTS. TRE charges $500 labor alone ... I'm paying $100 for labor. And now I don't have to ship!!! It really isn't that hard as was stated, you just need access to a press and you need time. The mechanic is more than willing to do it I just have to give him all the parts I want put in it ... that is why I am asking about the gvr4 first gear...

( and anything else that is worn or broken will be replace ) The car has 60k on it and was treated fairly well, I'm just trying to hit 2 birds with one stone by changing the clutch and my first gear at the same time that's all ... nothing was wrong with the tranny to begin with.

see tre's gvr4 gear pic..... you will need the input shaft and 1st gear. all the rest "should" swap. There are wierd differences is different age trannys the teeth width is what is different. when you put it back together if you get it wrong you will not be able to get the top case back on flush and it will bind the shafts. If you can bench shift it and turn the shafts by hand you got it right. Be sure to check all the hub sliders and the engadgement surfaces on the gears I usually end up cleaning them all up with my dremmel. I have not seen one of these with out effed up hub sliders. Seems dumb but the last 3 had new syncros and messed up hub sliders. Clean everything twice.

tre stands for team rip of.just about every thing trans shops use are oem including the syncros.put tre's next to the oems and see for yourself.i have had every trans apart from bm,tre, and shep.

there is no aftermarket trans parts for our trans's.exept for forks, rails, and difs and a few other things.

no one should pay more then 150 labor.i do full rebuilds in 3hours including cleaning, shimming, and painting.do the math

shepherd is the only one that doesnt just throw the trans together.

any fresh double cone 2nd trans should shift at 9k aleast all mine do.

1st gear galant is junk it is a weaker gear.good for auto-x guys that need more gear and dont have 500+hp.ask John if he uses or even sells them.

some of the 2g trans already have double cone 2nd just do a full set of oem syncros and check the hub-sleevs,and gears.the bearings are a good thing to replace and are under 30 each.the shift forks are the only thing you should buy aftermarket, the evo forks dont brake are much cheaper but the litle pads do fall of.the forks are a personal thing.if you are going to spend the money get the bm billet forks not the junk tre.

READ TRE=junk. we just had a trans with almost 1500 in tre parts and there junk forks wore worn in under 2k the litle screw came out.when we sent it back they wouldn't even replace it.they only soldered it back on and returned the same junk fork.i am not saying they dont now how to rebuild a trans, they do but for the money they get its a joke.you guys dont need to waste your money.John has good prices and does the best job.No this isnt a plug for John.I run my own trans and most in my town do.
