Last night I was driving home not raggin the car or anything and I made a right hand turn and I heard a small grind a running-over-plastic-bottle sound so I thought nothing of it. As I kept driving home I continued to hear the sound as it got worse with the turns I made both left and right turns. Well once I got close to home I made a sharp turn onto my road and my car felt like the axles are slipping and made POP and jerk and sounded so loud and Im pretty sure its in the tranny or something to do with the axles like the spines are slipping. Im not exactly sure but I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and what is going on? I can no longer drive the car its so bad now:cry: PLEASE HELP Thanks.

first of all u should not have kept driving it when it started, it is a axle, but when something breaks DON'T DRIVE THE CAR, it can only make it worse
quick fix expecially if it is passanger side
drivers has one extra step, u take two bolts off the back of the block that holds the axle in place
to find out which one it is put the car on a jack, put the car in nuetral, and spin the tires and see if one "wobbles" if so thats ur man, i am not sure if ur sposed to do this on awd, ask someone elce if not, just lift the back end to
yes the front ones will spin oposite directions(i think) if it does don't worry its sposed to

and why do u have defiants picture on ur sig?

I knew I was not hallucinating (quite believable right now :p )

i did lift the car off the ground and spin the wheels but im pretty sure they dont wobble....but when ido spin one wheel the other side does not spin...until finially it will catch and start spinning the other way...that seems to be the center diff correct? its FWD too

and the sig....sorry thats exactly what my car looks like and i loved the pic haha ill be changing it sorry.

well, it might be just your CV joints, simply replace them.

And usually when something on my car breaks, i dirve that piece until i get somewhere i can work on it, like a local shop, or a friends house. I recently had my throw out bearing blow up on me.. and i drove my car another 5 miles to a DSM shop i was on my way too. Then i drove it home another 40ish miles so that i could work on it. Sorry, but i'd never leave my baby somewhere where i cant see it, or visit in a matter of minutes.:thumb:

That happens to FWD with no LSD, many people just don't know.

so that is normal since i dont have a LSD? so then yall are saying its one of the axles? but when i spin the wheels they do not wobble...should i just pull out the axles and if so what am i looking for?

Typically you can feel which axle it is. The popping noise when you turn sounds like a bad outer cv joint. Bad inner ones pop whether your turning or not, usually on deceleration. My advice is to jack up the car and look to see if any of the cv joint boots are torn. If you have a torn boot, then the odds are pretty good that's your damaged cv joint. If it's the passenger side axle it'll be a piece of cake. Just remember to not pull on the axle once you have it installed. You can pull out the inner cv joint too far and damage it. I know, I've done it. :) While you're in there, look at your tie rod ends just for the hell of it. You never know.

Good luck.

BTW, you have an open differential. The one wheel spinning while the other doesn't is perfectly normal. My FWD does it too. :)

its not the axles! i pulled them out and they are perfectly fine...my father said its in the tranny and maybe a spyder gear? but were dropping the tranny and almost have it out and were going to see what it is. does anyone know what it might be inside the tranny? but it isnt the axles.

You can examine the boots and check for resistance at the joints and it could still be the axles. The one I just pulled was bad even though you could examine it and not see that there was anything wrong with it. Despite this, it was bad. I replaced it, and the car drove fine afterwards. I was getting the popping sound driving straight ahead and some mean torque steer. If the problem feels like it's both sides, then I doubt your problem is axle related. When the transmission fluid came out after you pulled the axles, did you see any metal shavings? If so, then you might have chewed up the differential. Also, check the splines on the axle. Do they look chewed up? Because this started to happen when you were steering, you might want to take a look at your steering rack too. Make sure nothing's bent. Also make sure the tie rods have some resistance. Examine the subframe for cracks too. Mine cracked which is what killed the axle. It popped and crunched and made my turns and driving all sloppy when that happened. Are you leaking any fluids? Also, exactly how was the car driving? Feel free to be specific.

Good luck

i am not sure about a fwd, but i would assume they are ezier than awd trannies. its real simple to pull of the top part of the casing and just take a look inside, and see whats going on. there are only 3 things to pull on the awd's to get into the main part of the trans(one is viscous, which u do not have). i would open it up and take a look. u just need to pull off the outer casing(its about 3-4 inches deep) it takes all the bolts on the part of the casing to get it off, and three in the side of the trans(all in a row), but watch out when u pull those three because there are springs with bearings in there that will come rolling out. after this u just need to put the trans in fifth gear and use a 36(mine but some are 34 i think) to pull off the big nuts on the gears, get a gear puller and pull out the gears in order(its pretty logical). then there is a little rod that holds the thing that puts 5th gear into place, u need to push this out with a 1/8" punch. now u need to pull the bolts to get the next step of the casing off, and look around.

note: this is a awd tranny, and i might have left out some stuff so i would get further instructions from somewhere elce, but this should give u an idea of how hard the job is. I think u can handle it if u can pull a trans, and are decent at taking stuff apart and getting it back together PROPERLY
