Well, I reluctantly bought a DSM yesterday, but dang it was a sweet deal and the price was as right as it gets. Even more reluctantly did I join another forum, but with all good deals there come catches and with all catches come needs for help SO:

The car has been sitting for 6 weeks and previous to this underwent what seems like minimal preventative maintenance. The car, among other problems, grinds hardcore going into 2nd UNLESS I can ween it in below 3k rpm. Above that and it is back to gravel in the meat grinder. It does NOT grind down shifting from 3rd to 2nd. All other gears are fine (it grinds downshifting into 1st from 2nd while moving, but this is somewhat expected). Judging from the low fluid levels that the car had when I bought it, I am guessing the tranny is low too. I plan on changing that out tomorrow. But from this so far, am I working with a bad 2nd gear? It seems the synchros are fine because it will down shift just fine, but I don't know jack about these cars. Anyone else experienced these issues? Thanks!

Agree and disagree with Defiant.

It sounds like you definitely have a 1st to 2nd gear synchronizer problem. But different fluid is not a solution. The synchronizer will have to be replaced.

Yeah, I'm going to just blow the tranny and then send it to Shepherd for a professional rebuild. Confound these tranny's! :D

Thanks for the help guys!

Not a good idea to wait until it breaks. Trannies can grenade when the blow. I got a tranny from an N/T that was on nitrous, hew blew his differential and it left a 4 x 4 in hole in the case.

DO NOT WAIT!

You WILL end up in the same boat I did, with a gear thrown out the side!
