What is crankwlak exactly, and why is it so common on 2g 95-96 talon tsi AWD. Also, how do you fix it and how much would it possibly be.

Crankwalk is failure of the crankshaft thrust bearing, a pair of faces on the middle main journal bearing which keep the crank from shifting axially. It can occur on virtually any motor -a pal had a '60 Falcon that had 3/8" walk on a straight six--- and which ran for years that way.

Cause is simply undetermined, but theories range from bum cranks to poor oiling to overpowering clutches.

The good news is that for every time you see it mentioned, it occurs in about 1/1,000 of those comments. You can read of "many" instances of it here, but considering the membership here is over 20,000, it's still an uncommon failure (and not limited to AWD).

Depending on extent, repair can vary from new bottom-end bearings to new cranks to new engines.

Agreed, Crankwalk is VASTLY exaggerated about on here.

True True. Diagnosis of crankwalk is the biggest mistake people make. Unless they actually measure crankshaft endplay, who's to know it was crankwalk that killed the motor. All the same I had my 95 FWD 4G63T check for play. Still within OEM specs. :)
